Doughnuts

Hansen Gregory, an American ship captain, is the man credited with inventing the classic hole-in-the-middle shape of the modern doughnut in 1847 by simply punching out the middle. Other versions of the story describe Gregory piercing the middle of the doughnut on the ship's steering wheel, so he could use both hands to steer.

In 1963 when President John F. Kennedy announced in Berlin, "Ich bin ein Berliner," he did not say, as is commonly believed, that he was a jelly doughnut. While there was a popular jelly donut called a 'Berliner', the phrase Kennedy used would not only have been understood by the German audience, but it is probably the best way to express what the president had intended to say. To state, "Ich bin Berliner" would imply that he was born in Berlin, whereas the word 'ein' implied he was a Berliner in spirit.

My Rambling Thoughts

No snow, yet. Just rain. Nice little 2 hr. rainstorm this morning. The weather guy said it was supposed to snow this morning. Hmmm. Oops: update. It’s snowing now.

Looking forward to a quiet weekend.

I wish that that old show ‘What’s my Line?” was still on. It would be great to see 45 as the mystery guest. Or maybe the old ‘Masquerade Party’ where guests wore a costume and the panel had to figure out who it was. Either one would give him great ratings and we would all enjoy his choices of answers. He probably would do well on ‘I’ve Got A Secret’

The origin of the doughnut is unknown, though different nationalities have had their own version of the treat throughout history. A type of doughnut is even mentioned in the Bible. Specifically, Chapter 7 and verse 12 of Leviticus says that a thanksgiving to God should be made of "cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried."

My Rambling Thoughts
Weatherman sez a couple of inches early tomorrow. I’ll just wait and see.

Bob and his family moved in across the street soon after my parents moved in to our new house. They had two daughters, a few years younger than my brother and I. Every Christmas Eve for over 50 years was spent with Bob and his family. Now we always have a Christmas Eve call. When I retired, he called and asked if I wanted to go to Scotland. That was my intro to the Focus Family. In his younger days he climbed all the 14K peaks in Colorado. He also traveled the world. At 65 he climbed Kilimanjaro. At 79 he and I did a non-motorized 14-day river run through the Grand Canyon.  Now he is in a care unit, due to his Alzheimer’s. Lori’s call last night was difficult to hear, but after a long, long conversation, this was the right choice. He is still in Loveland, about a mile from where he was living. Lori and her husband are nearby. His other daughter, Lisa, is in Chicago, but is thinking about moving back to Colorado. All I can do is wish the family the best during this difficult time and be there for anything they need.

Most historians believe that the Dutch were the first to introduce the modern doughnut to North America in the form of olykoeks, or "oil cakes" as early as the mid-19th century. These early doughnuts were balls of cake fried in pork fat.

My Rambling Thoughts

First Wed. of the month is old people’s day at the grocery store…10% off everything, if you’re old. I stocked up. It is a very windy day and the upcoming storm is building somewhere.

I worked with a lot of kids during my career. As a teacher it was daily, and as a supervisor, it was almost daily. One thing I learned is that kids who are overly verbal about a situation usually means they were very involved and are trying to distract the adult from their guilt. It sometimes took me valuable time to get to the truth, but every time it taught the children a valuable lesson. It was worth it. I also had counselors who were able to lend a big helping hand for the hardest ones. I have the feeling that 45 is just like the kids I taught.

I am not a big fan of Senator McSally, (R-AZ). She ran a very dirty campaign, and she lost. Then she was appointed to fill John McCain's seat when he passed. Today, at a Senate Hearing, she told a story of her rape while in the Air Force and that she didn't report it because she didn't trust the system. What a sad story.
