Trivia

John Montagu, Fourth Earl of Sandwich, was an important figure in the adventures of Captain Cook, who even named a group of islands after him. But in the United States, he will forever be known as the person after whom a delicious snack was named. His favorite was salt beef between two slices of toasted bread. People started calling it "the Sandwich," and the rest is history.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Winter is on the way. Weather guy says dusting to 2” of snow here tonight/tomorrow morning. Temps are dropping too. Just as I was enjoying the fall weather.

After decades of talk, President Biden made an official proclamation that Monday was Indigenous Peoples’ Day. I am a witness to this historical event.

Today is the Boston Marathon. There were 3 Hopi runners this year that I knew about. One is the son (25 years old) of one of Tuba Boarding’s retired janitors/ media producer. Thanks to technology, many of us were able to follow his run from start to finish. He finished with a fantastic time and averaged 5min 39 secs/mile for all 26 miles. Great to see locals do well.

Remember when Trump started separating children from their parents who crossed the border illegally? As of today, 1000-1500 of those children still have NOT been reunited with their parents. That administration did not see the need to track either the parents or the children. This is a national disgrace. This is not what America is about. The search continues to reunite, but there is extraordinarily little to go on. So sad.

AZ Cardinals are 5-0. Yeah!

Most people are aware of ‘deep fake’ technology, where pictures are created on the computer that look human, but do not exist. A little freaky. It is also used to have famous people doing things they have never done. Now the technology has advanced so much that the fake person can talk, walk, and do things. To make it freakier, they can now put a real person’s face, body movements, and voice into their movie. Congress needs to step in and monitor this and find a way to identify fakes that anyone on the internet can recognize. The tech companies are doing nothing to prevent confusion.

A friend in Tuba got a call from AT&T offering a cheaper Direct TV price. They scammed him out of $300 and turned off his Dish. I was able to help him get the real Dircect TV. The scammer had put his TV on 'vactation' mode which turned the feed off. He lost the $300 but learned a good lesson. Direct TV said they get several calls a day like his. One guy lost $1200.

Trivia

Fred A. Birchmore, 25, circled the globe by bicycle in 1935. The entire trip, through Europe, Asia, and the United States, covered forty thousand miles. He pedaled about 25,000 miles. The rest was traveled by boat. He wore out seven sets of tires.

Americans use their bicycles for less than one percent of all urban trips. Europeans bike in cities a lot more often - in Italy 5 percent of all trips are on bicycle, 30 percent in the Netherlands, and seven out of eight Dutch people over age 15 have a bike.
