Monsoon is taking a break. Hope it returns soon.

I was a school administrator for many years. Part of my job was to oversees the athletic program at several schools. Here is a note to the SC Justices: A coaches job responsibilities does not end with the final horn…they still must get the athletes back to the locker room and ensure that their athletes have a safe ride home. I also would ask the judges if the coach had been Muslim, if he/she would have been allowed to bring a prayer rug to mid-field?

Today’s unscheduled hearing sure were riveting. Media has skirted around his temper for years. Now we heard from someone who saw it. Call me old fashioned but I don’t want my President throwing food and/or dishes or grabbing a steering wheel when he doesn’t get his way.  It is just more proof for me that he is a bully.

Earthquakes Can Be Felt on the Other Side of the Planet

"Earthquakes can happen over 400 miles below the Earth's surface and be felt literally on the other side of the Earth," seismologist Zhongwen Zhan of Caltech tells Popular Mechanics. "In 2013, a magnitude 8 occurred near the Kuril Islands at about 400 miles depth. People in Australia felt the event!"

Monsoon continues. There was street flooding yesterday in a couple of areas of Flagstaff after 1.75” of rain fell on the peaks. It made a mess, but no homes were flooded. Storms in in the forecast for this afternoon.

Congrats to the CO Avalanche for winning the Stanley Cup.  Good game 6. Now for the parade.

I’ve heard about the Havana Syndrome. Until I watched 60 Minutes last night, I didn’t realize how many children of government workers are also affected. It is so sad.

A Magnitude 12 Earthquake Would Split the Earth in Half

"We've never seen anything larger than 9.5 and it was longer than the state of California," says Jones. "It would be theoretically impossible to have a magnitude 13 earthquake since it would require a fault bigger than the Earth."

1. The hybrid 'Pepper X' was created by Ed Currie in 2017. At over 3 million Scoville heat units it is the hottest pepper in the world and is judged to be too dangerous for human consumption in its pure form.

2. Carolina Reaper. The second-hottest pepper in the world, the Carolina Reaper clocks in at an astonishing 2.2 million Scoville heat units.

Another day of clouds, monsoon rain. A nice day overall and we sure need this precipitation. TV emergency alerts have already interrupted live TV twice to warn of possible flash flooding. I only hope the rain can soak in so that these warnings are not needed. Had to turn off my computer for about 30 minutes as thunder and lightning were close. Then the rain hit and the temperature dropped from 75° to 55° in about 10 minutes. Gotta love the monsoon.

It must be vacation time for many…Andy and Faith are on a cruise from Seattle to Alaska, a former colleague from TCBS, Lisa, is on a cruise with her mom to Hawaii. Safe travels for all.

Our discussion group was very informative on Climate Change. One of our participants has been keeping track of her water use and electric use for the past 8 years, since moving to Flagstaff from NJ. Over the years she has been able to cut down her use of each by about 15%. Another participant talked about his math for getting solar. He did it about 5 years ago and did not use enough to make up for the initial outlay. He is doing another look now that prices of solar panels has come down and his electric bill has risen. We all agreed that change in America must be financially advantageous before the majority of Americans will embrace it.

Route 66 Is Longer Than the Distance to the Earth's Core

"The boundary between Earth's mantle and core is roughly 3,000 kilometers below our feet—a little less than the total length of America's 'Mother Road,' Route 66," seismologist Jennifer Jackson of Caltech tells Popular Mechanics. "Thought to be a simple interface between solid rocks and liquid iron-rich metal, this remote region is almost as complex as Earth's surface."

"Impossible to reach in person, geophysical and experimental studies of this distant region reveal a fascinating landscape of chemical and structural complexity that influence what's happening on Earth's surface," Jackson says. "For example, the complex dynamics of Earth's core-mantle boundary affects Earth's protective geomagnetic field and the motion of tectonic plates."
