My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Monsoon rain here is usually in the early afternoon. Yesterday it rained about 2pm, again at 9pm, again at midnight. We need the moisture for the forest, and there was only minor road flooding.

The airlines have made traveling a real hassle. Most of the problems are caused by the airlines themselves. Overbooking flights, not ensuring that they have pilots, planes, and crew for their flights. Yes, Covid messed everything up. I thought the computer knew when and where their planes were, that it knew who would fly the planes, and what crew were assigned to a flight. If the computer ‘sees’ there are 10 flights at 10am and that they only have 5 pilots available, they would only book 5 flights. I understand there may be a pilot or crew that can’t make a flight. It happens…but not in the numbers it is happening now. It is just a excuse for poor management. Yet the higher ups are taking no blame and they still get paid. It is crazy.

Back in the day we used to take our 8th grade students to Medieval Times in LA on their class trip. They loved it. Times have changed and the employees of MT are trying to set up a union, saying that crowds have become too rowdy and there is not enough security, so the actors have to deal with people jumping into the arena, throwing things into the arena, and trying to grab the falcons as they fly over the crowd. If the union idea fails, here is an idea…the customers seem to like being in Medieval times, so if the misbehave or get too rowdy, have them be given Medieval punishments. No more making them leave; have them put in a stockade or a dungeon for 24 hours or so. Just an idea.

Earth’s Secrets

The Earth Isn't Exactly Round

Planet Earth is shaped more like a oblate spheroid which looks like a flatter circle. But it's definitely not flat.

Trivia

The vast destruction of WWII left two superpowers standing: the United States and the Soviet Union, both with conflicting ideas of how to restore international order.

The resulting Cold War lasted 40 years, during which time the United States and the Soviet Union tried to control as many countries as possible, even if those countries were not very valuable economically or strategically.

Historical Events

W     1698 – Thomas Savery patented the first steam engine.
W     1776 – The Continental Congress adopted a resolution severing ties with the Kingdom of Great Britain, although the final wording of the formal Declaration of Independence was not approved until July 4.
W     1788 – The US Constitution went into effect
W     1839 – 53 African slaves took over the slave ship Amistad.
W     1890 – The US Congress passes the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.
W     1897 – Guglielmo Marconi obtained his patent for radio in London.
W     1937 – Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan were last heard from over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to make the first equatorial round-the-world flight.
W     1937 – The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been guarded every minute since midnight July 2, 1937
W     1962 – The first Wal-Mart store opened in Rogers, Arkansas.
W     1964 – US President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the (Republican-written) Civil Rights Act of 1964 meant to prohibit segregation in public places.
W     1964 – The US Civil Right Act was signed into law
W     2002 – Steve Fossett traveled around the world in a balloon, 19,400 miles between June 18 and July 2nd.
W     2005 – The Live 8 benefit concerts – more than 1,000 musicians performed and were broadcast on 182 television networks and 2,000 radio networks.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

The monsoon continues to bring rain. Sadly, it is also bringing some flooding in the burn scars. One resident said that he tried to get flood insurance in early May but was told he was not in a flood prone area, so couldn’t be insured. He tried again when the fires started. He was told the same thing. Now he has a couple of inches of water in his home and he must pay the whole bill.

The Supreme Court has ruled that Biden can end the ‘stay in Mexico’ status of asylum seekers.

Then they overruled the EPA is setting carbon emission standards…which ultimately could affect many other Agency’s directives. Oops.

Back in the day, the Supreme Court grew so there would be one judge for each circuit district. That hasn’t happened since FDR. Now there are 11 circuits, so maybe it is time to have 11 court justices.

Earth’s Secrets

There Are a Billion Microbes in a Teaspoon of Soil

"The number of microbes in a teaspoon of soil is estimated to be roughly equivalent to the number of humans currently living in Africa (one billion)," biologist Dianne Newman of Caltech tells Popular Mechanics.

Trivia

In the United States, it is estimated that every adult unconsciously consumes one pound of insects each year due to garden produce, poor restaurant and home hygiene, and commercial foods for which the USDA allows a certain amount of insect fragments. Peanut butter, for example, is allowed to have 30 insect fragments per 100 grams.
