My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Snow has arrived. Crazy weather…first snow, then sunshine, then snow again. Not a lot sticking. Hopefully I will be able to make my Covid booster shot appointment this afternoon. On the brighter side, I’ll get to try out the remote start and the heated seat.

Now some of the 911 tapes have been released to the public. Shocking, horrifying. Will the officers ever be disciplined?

I’m tired of reading that inflation is at a 40-year high. They forget to mention that corporate profit is at a 70-year high.

AZ’s Kari Lake is on the national news everywhere. She is the Trump candidate and former news person from Phoenix who wants to be Governor. A video of a campaign stop shows here making a comment about the Pelosi break-in that had the audience and her campaign manager laughing. Very embarrassing for AZ for sure.

"Soul Sacrifice" by Santana (1969)

Long considered one of the great musical moments from the historic Woodstock festival in the summer of 1969. Carlos Santana was just a young pup when this song was released on his debut album at the end of the '60s. Checking in at a little more than 6 1/2 minutes, Santana's axe work and a stellar drum performance from the great Michael Shrieve are the highlights of the track.

Meaning/history of a phrase

Bite the bullet

The phrase essentially means doing something/making a difficult decision that we've been hesitant to make.

It can be traced back to soldiers in the battlefield who would have to go under emergency procedures without anesthesia or alcohol to numb the pain. So they'd have to literally bite a bullet.

Historical Events

1841 – 1st wagon train arrived in California. They left Independence, Missouri on May 1, 1841.
1846 – The first U.S. patent (#4,834) for an artificial leg was granted to Benjamin F. Palmer of Meredith, New Hampshire.
1873 – A patent (#144,182) for a gold crown was issued to Dr. John B. Beers of San Francisco, California on “artificial crowns for teeth”.
1879 – James Jacob Ritty and his brother John invented the first cash register, to stop the stealing by his bartenders in the Pony House Restaurant saloon in Dayton, Ohio.
1904 – First stadium built specifically for football opened (Harvard Stadium). Officially, when referring to more than one stadium, they should be called ‘stadia.’ But ‘stadiums’ works too.
1922 – King Tut’s Tomb was discovered.
1924 – Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming became the first female elected as governor in the United States.
1979 – The American Embassy in Tehran, Iran was seized.
1939 – First air-conditioned automobile (Packard) was exhibited, Chicago, Ill. The A/C option was available for $274 until 1941. WW II stopped the production of many luxury items. It wasn’t until 1953 that air conditioning was commercially available in cars again.
1946 – UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) was founded.
1948 – TS Eliot won the Nobel Prize for literature “for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry.”
1952 – The United States government established the National Security Agency, or NSA.
1964 – The (toy) Easy Bake over was released.
2008 – Barack Obama was elected President of the United States.

@92 – Walter Cronkite, American journalist, voice actor, and producer (d. 2009)
“The battle for the airwaves cannot be limited to only those who have the bank accounts to pay for the battle and win it. Democracy is in danger. Seats in Congress, seats in the state legislature, that big seat in the White House itself, can be purchased by those who have the greatest campaign resources, who have the largest bank accounts or own riches. That, I submit to you, is no democracy. It is an oligarchy of the already powerful.”– Walter Cronkite

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Wind is blowing in the expected storm. I guess I’m ready.

Storm forecasts are about as reliable as the political polls. One forecast says our town will get 1-3”and another 4-8” . Guess I’ll just wait until it comes to find out.

Affirmative Action has been around about 50 years… that’s over 2-1/2 generations. Did it work and is it still working? The Supreme Court is trying to figure that out. Their decision will have major implications for our country.

There are still protest in Brazil after the election. The former President has not conceded and says he will follow the constitution. Time will tell. His chief of staff says the former president will honor the constitution and aid in the transfer of power.

It is unfortunate that the first amendment did not include the Freedom to critically listen. Our country needs many more critical listeners who can sort through the vitriol and listen for real facts.

"Black Mountain Side" by Led Zeppelin (1969)

Led Zeppelin is full of tremendous musicians. "Black Mountain Side" is a simple folksy instrumental track composed by the great Jimmy Page that is truly a hidden gem on the band's debut record.

Meaning/history of a phrase

Wash one’s hands

To "wash one's hands" is to discard any kind of responsibility in a given situation. What, exactly, is the context for this?

This is literally what Pontius Pilate did, when he condemned Jesus Christ to die on the cross.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Clouds are here…weather guy says first major snowfall this week. Predicting 4-8”. I’m not worried and will just await its arrival.

Brazil may have a returning leader after elections…but far right-wing current President may claim voter fraud. I guess that is the far-right strategy around the world. Not a good sign.

Here is a dentist rant: Growing up in Colorado, I went to the same dentist even after I moved to Arizona. I had twice yearly checkups until the family dentist retired. I then found an office in Flagstaff that I have been going to ever since…about 40 years. That office and the dentist has changed hands at least 5 times and the hygienist has changed much more often. Today I went in for a cleaning by yet another new hygienist. I had to give her a list of my meds since she claimed it wasn’t on the computer. She also told me I had some deep pockets which is weird since I brush, floss and waterpik twice a day and there is never any blood. Then she took X rays. Then the dentist came in. She pointed out I had a temporary crown on a tooth…since 2020. The dentist who did the work said maybe it was missed because of COVID. Getting no satisfaction, they checked my ‘records’ and there was a note that I said I didn’t want the crown because I was getting an implant or a bridge next to that tooth. I said that was impossible. Why would I decline a crown, to replace a temporary one, due to a bridge that would connect to that tooth. They agreed it was odd. I set up an appointment to get a crown to replace the temporary one, but am now looking for another dentist office. Crazy.

"Classical Gas" by Mason Williams (1968)

A brilliant piece of work from this celebrated classical guitarist. Though many in rock or pop circles today have little recollection or knowledge of the song, it's enjoyed some steady staying power. Williams' exceptional acoustic piece, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, has been used in films and as the opening theme for a nighttime newscast in Baltimore during the 1970s.

Meaning/history of a phrase

Diehard

The term "diehard" dates back to the 1700s. But it wasn't quite used to describe a huge fan of something. Instead, it was attributed to those who struggled the longest when hanged!

A few years later, the term became popular after its use in 1811’s Battle of Albuera, when British officer William Inglis supposedly told his men: "Stand your ground and die hard … make the enemy pay dear for each of us!"

Historical Events

1889 – North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted as the 39th and 40th U.S. states.
1898 – Cheerleading was started at the University of Minnesota with Johnny Campbell leading the crowd in cheering on the football team with “Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!”.
1920 – KDKA in Pittsburgh broadcasted the results of the presidential election. It was the first scheduled radio broadcast.
1936 – The British Broadcasting Corporation initiated the BBC Television Service (now BBC1).
1947 – Howard Hughes flew a one-mile flight in the world’s largest aircraft “Hercules” aka ‘The Spruce Goose’.
1959 – Quiz show scandal – Twenty One game show contestant Charles Van Doren admits to a Congressional committee that he had been given questions and answers in advance.
1960 – Penguin Books is found not guilty of obscenity in the trial R v Penguin Books Ltd, the Lady Chatterley’s Lover case.
1983 – President Reagan signed the bill establishing the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on the third Monday in January.
