My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

A cold night, a chilly day.

I’m busy getting ready for my Thanksgiving in Mexico. I leave on Saturday at 5:30am on the shuttle. I’ll be busy most of tomorrow doing last minute stuff so this will be my last posting until I return from Mexico. I’ll post again in the 29th or 30th.

It looks like Ukraine accidently shot those missiles into Poland. Accident or not, Ukraine needs to compensate Poland for the loss of property and loss of life. The idea that Russia is responsible because they started the war doesn’t fly with me.

Nancy Pelosi is ending her leadership role with this session; she will not run again for a leadership position. She has done a good job during her long tenure as the first female Speaker. After the attack on her husband, she deserves to enjoy time with her family. She will continue as a Representative. What’s next for the House…lots of changes for sure. Hopefully a new Democrat leader will be able to carry on her legacy.

Little known Native American History

Popcorn has long been associated with the movies, or in recent years, the microwave, but although many of us may have wondered why popcorn pops, few of us have asked where popcorn actually came from. The indigenous people of the Americas first domesticated the strain of maize which produces popcorn thousands of years ago. In fact, popcorn artifacts dating back to 6.700 years ago were discovered in Peru. So the next time you grab a handful of your favorite snack, remember it's not just Orville Redenbacher you should be thanking.

Interesting comparison

The average household is worth $118,000. Amazon founder Jeff Besos is worth about $172 billion. That’s like comparing…

Ë The size of a white blood cell to the size of a finback whale.

Ë The height of a piece of Toblerone chocolate to the height of Mount Everest.

Ë The length of a single adult stride to the distance from NY to KY.

Ë The volume of a quite library to the roar of a (private) taking off.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

A very chilly morning. I headed out around nine to finish my Christmas shopping before I leave for Mexico on Saturday. Happy to say I’m all finished.

We are still awaiting ballot results from the mid-terms and now someone announces he is running for President in 2024. I have to say that if his speech had more truth in in, I would wonder why not to vote for him. His explanation of his term do not match my memories of those dark days.

My Physician order a new script for me from Caremark. The price is ½ that of Walgreens. Anyway, I got a notice that it would be delivered on Saturday. I took about 15 minutes on the internet, then a phone call to have UPS hold it at their facility in Flag, since it was to arrive Saturday afternoon. On top of that it costs $7.99 for UPS to hold a package. I paid the fee only to learn it would only be held 5 days. I think the call straightened it out.

Even better news, my replacement crown came in early; I will get it put on this Friday at 8am. Better than waiting for sure.

Little known Native American History

The phrase "Indian giver" has long been used as a derogatory term to describe a person who gives a gift, then takes it away. The implication is that gifts from Native Americans can't be trusted because you might be asked to return them. The reality was, in fact, far more complicated, largely due to cultural barriers. White settlers came from a tradition of using money to make purchases, while Native American tribes largely relied on systems of bartering, which meant the objects they were offering weren't actually gifts, but rather objects of value for which they understandably expected to receive something equivalent in return. You still wouldn't want to call someone an "Indian giver," but on the other hand, these 11 old insults have turned into compliments.

Slang Origins

1920: Copacetic

Meaning: mildly to incredibly satisfactory

“Copacetic” is often considered to originate from the African American community in the U.S., popularized by famous tap dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. Others claim it instead has roots in Yiddish, French, Latin, and Italian phrases. Its origin is ultimately unknown, having been traced back only as far as a 1919 biography of Abraham Lincoln, but it has managed to endure to the modern day.

Historical Events

1869 – Suez Canal (Egypt) opened, linking the Mediterranean & Red seas. It is 102 miles long.
1871 – National Rifle Association was organized (in New York City) by Army and Navy Journal editor William Conant Church and General George Wood Wingate.
1947 – The Screen Actors Guild implemented an anti-Communist loyalty oath.
1968 – Heidi Game Scandal – NBC cut the AFL championship to show the children’s film Heidi and millions missed the Raiders beat the Jets, 43-32. The movie started at 7:00 PM. The game ended at 7:07.
1969 – SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) discussions opened in Helsinki, Finland.
1992 – Dateline NBC aired a demonstration show General Motors trucks blowing upon impact, later it was revealed that NBC rigged the test.
2004 – Kmart Corp. announced it was buying Sears, Roebuck, and Company for $11 billion USD and naming the newly merged company Sears Holdings Corporation.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Another cold night and still a little chilly today.

Biden needs to address the border crisis. The recent resignation only makes it more of a mess.  Ignoring it only makes it worse.

In AZ, we finally have a new governor as the race was called for the Dem. Katie Hobbs. The Republican was an election denier. Now to hope the Dem lead for AG holds. The fat lady is warming up her voice with the Dem having a slight lead.

This morning 2 Russian missiles hit in a small Polish town on the border with Ukraine. Two locals were killed. Now what?

Little known Native American History

If the only thing you knew about Native Americans came from Hollywood, you would be forgiven for assuming every tribe lived in teepees, but this is far from the truth. Native Americans were encompassed by many tribes who spoke different languages and had different cultures and ways of life. Many of the Plains Indians tribes lived in teepees, but the nations of the Iroquois nation lived in longhouses, while the tribes of the Mesa Verde region dwelled in cliffs, while the tribes in Taos lived in pueblos, a site which makes the area one of the top 16 American cities for history buffs.

Meaning/history of a phrase

Be-all, end-all

William Shakespeare has made a huge contribution to the English language. He is credited for inventing numerous phrases and words. "Be-all, end-all" is one of them.

The phrase is used to describe a defining moment/the most important thing in a scenario. The playwright first used it when Macbeth was about to kill the king in his famous play 'Macbeth.'
