My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Wind gusts are increasing at an hourly rate. Spring in the high desert.

Arizona Republican Congressman Paul Gosar on Sunday promoted an antisemitic website that denies the Holocaust, praises Adolf Hitler as “a man of valor” and features many admittedly false articles. He was a local dentist, then our congressman, then the district boundaries changed, thank goodness, and he ran in another district.

The anti-CRT efforts to restrict how race is taught have clashed with initiatives in several states, including South Dakota, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, to teach Native American history — which has often been left out of instruction — more accurately and fully. Anti-CRT is a cute catch-phrase but it is doing damage to the education of our youth.

As I was browsing the internet this morning, I was happy to see that the Discoverer website picked Flagstaff’s Heritage Square downtown as one of the country’s prettiest town squares in the US. It is a nice venue for sure. The only problem not mentioned in the article, is that parking anywhere within many blocks is expensive.

Dominion has settled its lawsuit against FOX news for $787.6 million, well shy of the $26 billion they had asked for. I guess the $$ talked and the principle was forgotten.

Enjoy…

Geography…

Egypt Isn’t Only Located in Africa

Sure, Egypt is part of the African continent, but it’s technically considered to be a transcontinental country.

While the Suez Canal divides Asia and Africa, there’s actually a small peninsula in Egypt that transcends the canal and toes the line between the two continents.

Moon Facts…

The craters are always named after people

Ever wondered how the multitude of lunar craters get their names? Traditionally they have been named after scientists or philosophers, such as Copernicus, Archimedes or the Aristarchus crater shown here. The current guidelines for naming newly discovered craters is that they must be named after a scientist or explorer who has made important contributions to astronomy—and especially to the study of the Moon and our solar system—and has been deceased for at least three years. In addition, the name cannot be the same as any existing lunar location.

State Names Origins…

Alaska

Long before Russian explorers first landed in Alaska in 1741, the native Unangan people of the Aleutian Islands and the Sugpiaq people of the Alaska Peninsula called the region home. Those groups were collectively dubbed as the Aleut by the Russians, and it’s the Aleut language that we thank for Alaska’s name. Natives referred to the Alaska Peninsula and mainland as alaxsxag, a word that’s also sometimes spelled as alyeska. That word translates to “great land,” which is perhaps the most appropriate phrase to describe Alaska, as the state’s impressive breadth makes it larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined. This “great land” of the American northwest is also home to the largest national park in the United States, where you can witness Alaska’s ethereal and expansive beauty firsthand.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Another nice spring day.

The HOA crew was busy this morning clearing out all the pine needles. The parking lot no longer looks like pine-covered forest ground.

AI was investigated on 60 Minutes last night. The newest AI is BARD from Google. It is different because it doesn’t search the internet for its answers. BARD is full of ‘hallucinations’ that delivers a response that is totally incorrect. The more I see about AI the more there needs to be a disclaimer on everything it produces. There is more than enough false or incorrect information out there without AI adding its 2-cents worth.

Another mass shooting kills 4 and injures 20 at a sweet-sixteen birthday party. So sad.

Just so we don’t forget it is spring, a wind advisory has been issued for most of Northern AZ for tomorrow…up to 35mph wind with up to 50mph gusts.

Enjoy…

Geography…

The Statue of Liberty Isn’t Technically in New York

The Statue of Liberty has become a symbol of New York City since its erection in 1875.

But the colossal sculpture is part of New York only because the Supreme Court deemed it so in 1987. Geographically, however, it is located on the New Jersey side of the state line and is even listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.

Moon Facts…

Plants can grow in lunar soil…

Scientists have been experimenting with soil samples brought back to Earth decades ago by the Apollo astronauts and have discovered that the lunar surface material, also called regolith, is capable of sustaining plant life. It’s an exciting discovery for the future of space exploration, which could allow astronauts to grow their own food in space.

State Names Origins…

Alabama

The state of Alabama owes its modern name to Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto, whose 16th-century expedition brought him to the region. There he encountered Native American inhabitants known to De Soto as the Alabamans, who would become the namesake for both the river and the state. The word itself roughly translates to “vegetation gatherers” in the Choctaw language, as Alabama is a combination of the words “alba” meaning vegetation, and “amo” meaning a picker or gatherer. Given Alabama’s lush vegetation — thanks in no small part to its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and other major rivers — it’s no surprise that the name refers to the state’s incredible natural beauty.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Great spring day. Great day for a walk.

The sports world is entangled in a mess. Who should win out…Trans people vs Title IX? I guess I am really old school. Title IX changed sports for all schools and adulthood. It was designed to level the playing field and money spent on sports to be more equitable. Now some who were born male but identify as female are saying they should be allowed to compete in women’s sports. I hope the sports world finds a solution to this dilemma. I’m reminded that a loud voice does not always offer the best solution.

The Kennedy dynasty is in the news. Robert Jr., an all-anti-vaccine guy, is running for President. Many in the family say they support Biden. Time will tell.

AZ legislature is insane. The AZ School for the Deaf and Blind has been around since 1912. It has always been on an every 10-year renewal by the legislature. The Freedom Caucus of AZ, the far-right members, wanted it to be renewed every 2 years. Pro-school advocates said that would severely hinder recruiting teachers who would not to work at a place that might be closed by the legislature so often. Finally, the sides agreed to a review every four years. This is not a pro-education stance. It is sad that so many anti-education legislators are voted into office in AZ.

Geography…

Holland and the Netherlands Are Two Separate Things

Holland and the Netherlands tend to be used interchangeably when talking about the specific country in Western Europe — but they’re not at all the same. The Netherlands is a country with 12 provinces, including the regions of North Holland and South Holland.

Calling the Netherlands “Holland” would basically be like referring to the United States as Texas or New York.

Moon Facts…

The Moon is rich in natural resources and could be mined for gold, platinum, rare earth metals and possibly even water. Particularly exciting for the future of space travel is the way in which the water can be split into its hydrogen and oxygen components and liquefied to make rocket fuel. This would allow longer voyages to use the Moon as a kind of refueling station.

Beauty in our 50 states…

1. California

Yes, it has issues. Lots of ‘em. But how many beautiful things do you know that don’t? For a moment, let’s drop the talk of climate change and traffic and talk for a minute about how California has EVERY SINGLE KIND OF BEAUTY you could possibly want. Start in the south with the expansive, natural beaches set against towering cliffs. Then move inland to the moon-like desertscapes in the Mojave. There’s the drive along the PCH and Big Sur, leading in the wine country of the Central Coast and up into San Francisco, a city that owes its aesthetic to cliffside views and curlicues of fog. Oh, and lest we forget Yosemite National Park. Or Redwood National Park. Or Death Valley National Park. Or any of the many underrated national parks. Or the wine country that stretches from Napa Valley in the north to Temecula in the south. Look, the Golden State isn’t for everybody—but as far as sheer diversity of natural beauty is concerned, nothing else comes close. You can see why, once upon a time, people crossed expansive grasslands and steep mountains and punishing deserts only to arrive in California and say to themselves, the trip was worth it after all.Want more Thrillist?
