The live TV coronation happened. AZ is on Standard time and I was not getting up in the middle of the night to see it. Highlights will have to do.

Kentucky Derby should be interesting this afternoon. The favorite was scratched for an injured foot early this morning.

Elephants are the only mammals that can't jump

Maybe it makes sense to you that elephants cannot jump. After all, they are gigantic and extremely heavy, and jumping would surely put a lot of unneeded stress on their knees. However, animals like the rhino and hippo, similarly gigantic and heavy animals, can still jump, so maybe there is something else going on. Unlike all other mammals, elephants’ leg bones all point downwards, which means they are physically unable to create any sort of ‘spring’ upwards. It is thought they evolved this way as it allows them to be sturdier with their massive frame.

Origins of State Names

Maryland

Women have played an undeniably important role in America’s history, yet only three states are named after female individuals. Maryland is one of them, named after English King Charles I’s wife, Queen Henrietta Maria. Some religious scholars, however, point out that Maryland’s founder George Calvert intended the colony to be a refuge for Catholics, and believe its name to be biblical in nature, named it after Mary, the mother of Jesus. No matter which way you cut it, Maryland’s name pays homage to a powerful and influential woman.

Today’s Thoughts

Another windy spring day.

Severe mental illness is a real problem in the US. We learned decades ago that locking them up led to horrific conditions with lots of abuse. Now, many severe mentally ill individuals are walking the streets. Most of them seem to be homeless. An ill NYC resident was choked to death by a former military guy on a subway. The victim should have had mental health services. Now there are protests to have the choker arrested. Our country needs to find better answers to the homeless and mental health crisis than death.

I’m looking forward to a quiet weekend and little wind.

The penguin is the only bird that can swim but cannot fly

Penguins are unique in the bird world. They are the only non-flying bird that can swim. Lots of birds, such as the duck and the seagull, swim as a secondary means of transportation to flying. They land on ponds and lakes to rest and cool down, but they fly to really get around. Penguins do not have the luxury of an option. Poorly built to move quickly on land, penguins travel quickly through the water when they need to move from place to place.

Origins of State Names

Maine

Similar to Louisiana, we sort of have the French to thank for the name Maine, at least according to the modern day state legislature. The first recorded use of the name Maine was in a 1622 land patent from King Charles calling the area “the Province or County of Mayne.” While some historians believe the name was used to differentiate it as the mainland, the Maine legislature adopted a resolution in 2001 stating that Maine’s name was taken from a nearby French province by the same name. It only took 379 years, but we can finally put that debate to rest.

• 1840 – The Penny Black postage stamp, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, was the first adhesive postal stamp.

• 1937 – The German zeppelin Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed within a minute while attempting to dock at Lakehurst, New Jersey. Thirty-six people are killed.

• 1954 – Roger Bannister broke four-minute mile (3:59.4) at the Iffley Road Track in Oxford, England.
