Another warm and nice spring day.

There were 2 small earthquakes in Cameron, AZ yesterday. They were 3.0 and 3.2. This is a small community with a great historic trading post/restaurant between Tuba City and Flagstaff. Many boarding school students come from this area. Thankfully, there were no injuries or damage reported.

CNN gave valuable prime time to a NH Town Hall meeting last night that gave Trump a change to do his shtick. He didn’t disappoint his backers. Everyone saw that if he wins the Presidency, it will simply be a repeat of his first term. I have to wonder how many Americans are ready for that.

Beavers were once the size of bears.

If you lived roughly 10,000 years ago, you would probably be a little scared of beavers. You see, beavers used to be the size of black bears and they roamed the lakes and wetlands of North America only 10,000 years ago. Thankfully for everyone nowadays, giant beavers died out during the last ice age, leaving us with the smaller, cuter, fuzzier, beaver that we know today. The current beaver is the national animal of Canada.

Origins of State Names

Missouri

From one watery state to another, Missouri was also named after the river that bears its name. In 1673, a Native American Sioux tribe named the Missouris — a name given to them by the Fox tribe — called the area home. That name was initially thought to mean “muddy water,” but in later years it was determined to mean “people with big canoes.” You’d need big canoes to navigate the Missouri River, which believe it or not is actually the longest river in the United States! The river was named after these original inhabitants, which in turn gave its name to the future territory and eventual state.

Mostly sunny and a little cooler. It’s May: It may be 75° or it may be 60°. It may be windy or it may not be windy.

NY Representative is formally charged with 13 counts of fraud and financial crimes. After pleading Not Guilty in court, he came to the mic and called this ‘another witch hunt’. Somehow, I don’t think that will fly in court for the neophyte.

The Nuggets won last night, now it is 3-2 Nuggets. Still torn in this playoff so I just hope for a good game.

The Jeopardy! Masters is this week on ABC. It is nice to see the former Champs play.  The two downsides in this show: one has to turn away at the beginning so as not to see where the Daily Doubles are hidden; the newly colored game board is very distracting. The questions are great.

With all the rising prices, I checked the inflation calculator. It turns out a 1955 15-cent McDonald’s hamburger, should cost $1.99 in 2023. According to the calculator it should only cost $1.79. I guess that means McDonald’s is making more actual money now.

Only male turkeys gobble

There is a reason that only male turkeys are known as “gobblers” - they’re the only ones who gobble! Male turkeys gobble as a way to attract females during mating season, with the louder and prouder gobbles winning over the more meek noises on unworthy competitors. Female turkeys also make unique noises, although those sound more like chirps and clucks than the distinctive male turkey gobble. Male turkeys are also the only ones with large, prominent tails used to attract mates.

Origins of State Names

Mississippi

Though its glistening waters weave through 10 states, the Mississippi River lent its name to just one. The river was named by the area’s Native Ojibwe tribe, who called the river misi sipi, which translates to "big river." It has also been said that the Native American communities, who long used the water for transportation and food, referred to it as the "Father of Waters." How apt, given that this namesake of Mississippi continues to provide in those ways even today.

Nice day and no wind yet.

Yesterday was Cheryl’s 76^th birthday. She taught at TCBS for years and joined our retirement group years ago. She doesn’t drive much anymore and lives about 30 miles from Flag. When I called her, she was in very good spirits and enjoying her life in Williams. Good to hear.

A jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and forcibly touching a woman back in the 1990’s. Will this change the opinion of his followers, his distractors, or the history books?

I got gas this morning at Sam’s. It has dropped to $4.13/gallon. Very slowly dropping.

Electric eels can release enough power to start 50 cars.

Electric eels can create so much electricity that they could start approximately 50 cars with one massive shock of voltage. While they are called eels, electric eels aren't actually eels at all. They are a species of knife fish, very closely related to the catfish. This species of eel is so unique that it has its own genus: Electrophorus. One species of eel can create up to 760 volts of electricity with one shock.

Minnesota

Though it’s nicknamed the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” — and that’s selling it short, given there are a staggering 11,842 lakes found throughout the state! — Minnesota takes its name from a river. That river was named by the Native American Dakota tribe who inhabited present-day Minnesota. Mni is the Dakota word for "water"; sota is largely said to mean “cloudy or muddy,” while others say it means “sky-tinted.” For a definitive answer, state historians point to the Treaty of 1851 in which the Dakota included the direct translation as “land where the water is so clear it reflects the sky,” which is a beautiful description of this lush northern territory.
