Today’s Thoughts

A great weather day…again. No complaints

Memorial Day is an American holiday honoring the men and women who died while serving in the military. My parents knew it as Decoration Day. It began in the years following the Civil War and became a national holiday in 1971. It has come to mark the beginning of the summer season.

I see lots of posts on Facebook that I ‘like’ or that make me laugh or I enjoy and I want the person who posted it to know I enjoyed it. I thought it showed appreciation without having to say anything. Yesterday I was in a very good mood and liked a lot of posts. Suddenly I was told by Facebook that I was restricted for 24 hours for ‘something’. All I had done was ‘like’ too many posts. I took some minutes to review community standards and found another site where people talk about community standards. It was there I learned that Facebook will restrict its members posts if there are too many emoji responses within a timeframe. The guess is that this is to prevent bots that are not real people from turning a post viral. There must be a better way to prevent bots from the Facebook site. Guess I’ll change my strategy to make the machine happy. I would complain to Facebook, but it is free, and they can have whatever rules, no matter how ridiculous. Algorithm 1, Me 0.

Our local daily newspaper, the AZ Daily Sun, has been published since 1898 as the Coconino Sun and since 1946 as the Daily Sun. Flag has grown a lot since those days. Our population is at a little over 75,000. When I arrived here in 1971 it was about 42,000. The price of the paper has gone up so that a paper subscription is about $300/year. I switched to the e-edition a few years ago. They had gone from printing 7 days a week to 6 days a week with no Monday paper. Today, the e-edition said that in mid-June the print paper would be going to 3 days a week and home delivery would be through the mail. It is a sad commentary for a university town.

Ocean Trivia

Origins of State Names

Texas

Texans have that sweet southern charm, so it’s fitting that its name translates to “friends or allies.” Spanish explorers encountered the Native American Caddo tribe in present-day Texas in the 1540s, and are believed to have interpreted their word teyshas as the tribe name, recording it as Teyas or Tejas. While the errors were corrected and the usage stopped over time, the name eventually lived on. “Friendship” has even been the Texas state motto since 1930, so if you don’t have a pal from Texas already then be sure to find yourself one.

Historic Events

  • 1886 – John Pemberton placed his first advertisement for Coca-Cola, in The Atlanta Journal.
  • 1919 – Albert Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity was tested (and later confirmed) by Arthur Eddington and Andrew Claude de la Cherois Crommelin.
  • 1953 – Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, became the first explorers to reach the summit of Mount Everest, which is at 29,035 feet above sea level.
  • 2004 – The National World War II Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C.

Today’s Thoughts

A nice day to begin the Memorial Day Weekend. Doors and Windows open. Fresh air is nice.

More proof I live in the middle of a National Forest. Yesterday morning an adult Black Bear was seen trying to cross I-40 within the city limits. It took officials from AZ Game and Fish, County animal control and several county and state police to wrangle the bear back into the wild. There were lots of video on social media to show the successful results.

There are now THREE slow moving fires within 25 miles of Flagstaff. Fire crews are busy at all three sites to prevent them from growing. I’m sure glad there is no big wind as they fight these fires. No word yet on what started them.

The Secretary of Treasury has been saying for weeks that June 1 is the projected day for default if the debt ceiling isn’t raised. Yesterday Congress fled DC for the long weekend, claiming they are still meeting by zoom to reach a compromise. As the vacationing legislators continued to grow, the Secretary of the Treasury said that the ‘new’ default deadline in now June 5th. I am disappointed that a 3-day weekend is more important than default. I have several younger working friends who have told me that inflation and gas prices are keeping them home over the long weekend. How crazy.

Origins of State Names

Tennessee

It’s an unfortunate truth that sometimes details get lost in the annals of history. While that’s the case with regards to Tennessee’s naming origins, one agreed-upon fact is that Spanish explorer Juan Pardo was the first to record the name in 1567. He and his crew are believed to have traveled through a Cherokee village called Tanasqui, or, potentially Tanasi. The meanings of those words are not known, but have been theorized to be derivations of "winding river" and "river of the great bend." With both the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers winding through its borders, it’s very possible if not likely that they could have inspired the state’s name.

Today’s Thoughts

Sunshine and blue sky…couldn’t ask for more.

I got busy yesterday and by the time I got home, I was too tired to post anything.

Yesterday I did some shopping and then met up with Faith and Andy for a nice lunch. They were just back from Phx. Andy’s brother is still in rehab as Andy deals with the medical personnel. They are giving his brother meds to stop his seizures. Andy thinks they need to reevaluate his meds, but the Dr., the rehab center, the hospital in Phx and HIS aren’t communicating very well. It is a daunting task, but both Andy and Faith worked for the Bureau and know how to handle a bureaucracy.

Circle K has a promotion to start summer driving and yesterday between 4p and 7p regular gas was had a 40 cents discount. I went over about 4:15. I filled up my tank at $3.79/gallon. Been quite a while since I’ve seen gas that cheap. I only had about a 5-min. wait for an open pump. I told a couple of friends and both said it sounded ‘sketchy’. I agreed but told them to check the website.

Happy to see the new Jeopardy Masters Champion. I’m a real jeopardy fan since I was in Jr. High. Watching the historical best and most-wins competitors has been very entertaining.

Yesterday there was a 19-acre wildfire near Sedona. By this morning it was 33-acres. It is in rough, steep terrain. I hope they get hold of it soon.

A few weeks ago, I got a new Visa card that pays better cash-back than the one I had. I am in the process of changing all my bills to that new card. This morning I went the APS (Az Public Service) to change my payment. Every time I got blocked from putting in a credit card. I called and after 2+ hours I think it is changed. After three phone center people and two different techs at their credit card provider, a supervisor finally did it. The good outcome is that I remained calm with every new person. When I finally got a supervisor, she simply went on my account and changed it. She apologized and marked my current bill of $75 as paid. I did keep reminding each new person that it was 2023 and not 1970 when it comes to internet payments.

Origins of State Names

South Carolina

It’s no surprise that South Carolina shares an origin story with North Carolina, as described above. Despite this, South Carolina possesses a unique identity and southern charm that differentiate it from its neighbor to the North.
South Dakota
Once again, there’s no unique origin story for South Dakota, as it shares that history with North Dakota. But what makes South Dakota particularly stunning compared to its northern neighbor are South Dakota’s
Black Hills and Badlands that make it a must-visit site for nature lovers.

Historic Events

  • 1703 – Tsar Peter the Great founded the city of Saint Petersburg.
  • 1933 – The Century of Progress World’s Fair opened in Chicago.
  • 1941 – The British navy sank the German battleship, Bismarck, in the North Atlantic near France, killing over 2,000 Germans. Sink the Bismarck song
  • 1972 – The Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty was signed by United States President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev. The Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty limited the US and USSR to 2 anti-ballistic missile complexes with 100 missiles each, and the number of intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine-launched ballistic missiles was frozen at the then-existing levels.
