A nice Sunday.

Glad to see the CU buffs won, again. Tough game but they pulled it off.

Our discussion group on Climate Change and Migration was very interesting. With ocean’s rising, small islands are forced to change their fishing habits, and in some cases they must leave the island. Most have trouble finding a similar culture to assimilate into. Those of those who leave due to a natural disaster (fire or other flooding) so some back and rebuild in the same area, hoping it won’t happen again. The authors did not give any alternatives to solve the problems. We all noted that was a departure from their usual present an issue and offer solutions.

A Prairie Home Companion 

Chris Thile, the 36-year-old host of A Prairie Home Companion, says that 2.6 million weekly listeners—himself included—think of the long-running public radio show made famous by Garrison Keillor as an American treasure.

“It’s a place for us to take our cares and woes and hold them out at arm’s length for examination and even celebration,” he says of the 43-year-old show. “It brings us together and makes us feel more alive.”

Thile, a Grammy-winning mandolin virtuoso who made a splash with the trio Nickel Creek and the band Punch Brothers before taking the helm at APHC last year, says the show’s purpose is to mirror the American experience and to help people find common ground.

“What I hope the show does—this is what it did for me—is to offer the opportunity to connect with the country at large every Saturday,” he says.

Random Trivia…

Back in Colonial America, slaves could win their freedom through lawsuits. Although there was a low chance of succeeding, winning in court meant that the slave was now a citizen. Since slaves often didn't have last names and needed a last name to be a citizen, they were often just given the last name of 'Freeman.'

The Leaning Tower of Pisa was never straight. Known for its four-degree lean, this Italian bell tower was constructed in the 12th century. When construction on the second story started, the tower started to lean due to the unstable ground it was built on.

Each day starts off cooler, and fall is moving in.

There were a couple of light showers yesterday. Today look dry.

My Covid Toe is much better today…no pain.

Christiane Amanpour started her CNN career at 25. She has now been there 40 years. Great Reporter.

Unions in my life…some good some not so much. Union 1: closed shop. I started at a grocery store and a bagger…remember them?...and in 6 weeks I was a clerk. The union never saw me when I was a bagger, but,  2 days after being promoted, there was the representative telling me it was $100 to join, then and then $10/month to remain active. As a bagger it would have been $50 to join and $5/month and when promoted, I would not have to join again. Not a great start, as the $100 to join would be $975 today with inflation. I did get good wages including triple pay for holidays and time and a half for Sunday. I was never involved in a strike. 2: I joined the BIA teacher’s union, which was not a closed store, when the BIA dropped all teachers from Year Round to career seasonal…losing 2 months of salary. We fought them, had it overturned for 2 years and I got a $5000 check for back pay. The BIA did it right the second time so 3 years later everyone, except the principal, was career seasonal. A good experience. Even after becoming an administrator and unable to have union benefits, I remained pro-union. I wish the writer’s strike and the actor’s strike in solidarity was over. There are lots of repeats on the TV, but the union has some very good bargaining chips. Same for the new automotive strike.

If you like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, you’ll love…the National Blues Museum.

Blues music, an amalgam of African-American slave songs, spirituals and field hollers, bloomed in the Mississippi Delta, Louisiana and Texas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Farm workers, migrating north, brought their music with them to Chicago, Detroit and St. Louis, and decades later the blues were part of the primordial soup that created rock ’n’ roll. Both overlapping blues and rock are showcased in Cleveland’s popular Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as well as the lesser-known National Blues Museum in St. Louis.

Monsoon returning today.

The airline strike is putting Biden in a little mess. First, he is pushing ‘green energy’…and airplanes are not part of that. Second, he is a strong union supporter according to his senate record. The airline CEO had a salary jump of 40% this year and the union wants the same percentage. If he doesn’t back the union in this strike he will lose their vote in 2024, if he supports the backs the airlines, he will lose a lot of corporate support. Tough call.

Last night one of my toes turned reddish and I had pain in my foot and sometimes going up my leg. That pain awakened me many times last night. I wanted to wait a day or two before calling the doctor. I then realized I would have to wait the whole weekend. I got an appointment for 9:30am with my doctor. He thinks it ‘COVID toe’. I’ve never had COVID and am fully bolstered. He said it is when the immune system is working too hard. Anyway, I got an antibiotic shot, then have 7 days of more antibiotics and should be fine. He said to take Tylenol of the pain

The Cornish-Windsor Bridge

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in the U.S., with its two 746-foot-tall towers, its iconic orange paint, and its magnificent suspension cables. But long before engineers conquered the Golden Gate Strait (in 1937), they were building wooden bridges. Carpenters Bela Fletcher and James Tasker built the Cornish-Windsor covered bridge, spanning the Connecticut River between New Hampshire and Vermont, in 1866, a year after the end of the Civil War. The 450 1/2-foot bridge, constructed of lattice trusses of 6-by-8-inch spruce timber, is the longest wooden bridge in the U.S. And it photographs well.

Random Trivia…

There were “dance marathons” during the Great Depression. These human endurance contests served as a way of giving financially unstable married couples a roof over their head and food to eat for a few days. The dance partners would take turns sleeping while the other propped them up and continued dancing with them.

One in 200 men are direct descendants of Genghis Khan. The Mongolian Emperor was known for siring at least 11 children. Scientists conducted a study in 2003 that showed that one in 200 men share a Y chromosome with the conqueror.
