First hard freeze of this fall…25°. My furnace came on about 5am for the first time this fall.

An annular solar eclipse will happen Saturday morning. It will be from Oregon to N. AZ, NM and farther south. Many cultures have legends to explain what is happening.

…Hindus believe one diety beheaded another causing an eclipse.

…Mexico: The belief originated with the Aztecs, who thought that an eclipse occurred because a bite had been taken out of the moon. If the pregnant woman viewed the eclipse, her infant would have a bite taken out of its mouth.

…Zulu: there was a solar eclipse, and according to legend, this motivated the Zulus, who claimed that it was a sign that they would prevail.

…Navajo: stay inside, pray, don’t eat or drink during eclipse. Peace will occur after the eclipse. Animals also seek shade, stay silent, and accept that good will come.

Talking On A Date Wasn't Believed To Be Important

During the 1960s, a notable trend emerged where individuals sought to avoid conversation during dates. This trend was based on the belief that women lacked conversational skills, leading to the encouragement of planning activities that would eliminate the need for talking throughout the entire date.

An ancient text called the Voynich Manuscript still baffles scientists. Hand-written in an unknown language, the Voynich Manuscript has been carbon-dated to roughly 1404–1438. Hundreds of cryptographers and master codebreakers have tried to decipher it over the years, with none succeeding in grasping its meaning or origin.

The Eastern Roman Empire’s weapon, called Greek Fire, was used in ship-mounted flamethrowers. This weapon was so unique and deadly due to the fact that throwing water onto it would only feed the fire. It was mostly used in naval warfare, as the large flamethrowers needed for its projectile use could be better accommodated by ships rather than infantry.

Fall has arrived. Chilly mornings, warm afternoons.

I had a great lunch with Andy and Faith. They have been traveling a lot so Andy can take care of his younger brother. He is in Phoenix, after time in SLC, Provo, and Winslow in the past few weeks. He will be going into Hospice soon. Gerald is the youngest of the family and is 65.  The family has been avoiding Hospice for quite a while but finally decided it is the right time now.

I’m only using my cane on steps and carry it as a backup…so I’m much better. This has been an ordeal, but it won’t last much longer.

Laser Erasers Hailed As A Groundbreaking Technological Innovation

Lasers have evolved from their original purpose of correcting typewriter errors to being used in various treatments such as eye surgery and tattoo removal. In the past, a large laser gun would be aligned with the error on the paper and fired, typically taking around 15-20 seconds for the desired effect.

Did you know that “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was written, not about the mythical Land of Oz, but the homeland of the Jews - Israel?

The lyrics were written by Yip Harburg, the youngest of four children born to Russian-Jewish immigrants. His real name was Isidore Hochberg, and he grew up in a Yiddish-speaking, Orthodox Jewish home in New York.

The song's music was written by Harold Arlen, also a cantor's son. His real name was Hyman Arluck, and his parents were from Lithuania.

Together, Hochberg and Arluck wrote "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," which was voted the 20th century's No. 1 song by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment e who rose from the ashes to make the dream a reality.

A nice day. I went grocery shopping and only using my cane as a backup. Slowly getting better.

Oops. We have all been warned about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is now even more important to be aware. Amazon’s Alexa messed up big time. It told users that the 2020 election was “stolen by a massive amount of voter fraud.” Amazon claims that the problem has been fixed. Really? Yes really.

War in Ukraine, War in Israel. The House won’t vote on Speaker today, so the US could help both wars. Craziness exemplified.

ATMs Were Believed To Be Ineffective

In the present day, it is difficult to envision our lives without the convenience offered by ATMs. However, during their initial introduction, people harbored doubts about their importance and consequently refrained from utilizing them.

The saying “fly off the handle” originates from the 1800s. It’s a saying that refers to cheap axe heads flying off their handles when swung backward before a chop.

110. 4% of the Normandy beaches are made up of shrapnel from the D-Day Landings. More than 5,000 tons of bombs were dropped by the Allies on the Axis powers as part of the prelude to the Normandy landings. Scientists who have studied the sand on the beaches of Normandy and they’ve found microscopic bits of smoothed-down shrapnel from the landings.

 A Japanese fighter pilot once dropped wreaths over the ocean to commemorate the dead from both sides during WWII. During a sea battle in the Pacific Ocean in December 1940, two Royal Navy ships, the HMS Prince of Wales, and the HMS Repulse were sunk by Japanese fighters. The following day, Japanese Flight Lieutenant Haruki Iki flew to the location of the battle and dropped two wreaths over the seas.
