Thoughts for the day

I’m starting the week with a nice winter day.

The Cards beat the 49ers, I was watching the Broncos v Chiefs game when the local Phx station decided it to be a blowout and moved to the Chargers v Raiders game. BOO!

Biden signed the bill that restores my SS payments without the double dipping law that cut my SS. When I took my SS at 62, I was one of the early ones to lose a big chunk of my already small SS check. Glad to see it was finally fixed.

Bar codes on merchandise have been around 50 years. Time for an upgrade. Soon it will be QR codes that will contain much more information. I guess that’s a good thing.

I actually enjoyed watching the electoral college votes being certified by the House today. It is boring. It takes about an hour. It is democracy in action. And this year, like every count except the previous one, went off without a hitch. Winner for democracy.

Inventions…

Josephine Cochrane - Dishwasher

Tired of her fine china getting chipped by hand washing, Josephine Cochrane invented the first practical mechanical dishwasher in 1886. She created a wheel of wire compartments, each designed to hold specific types of dishes, that rotated while hot soapy water sprayed from the bottom. Her invention was first popular in hotels and restaurants before becoming a common household appliance. Cochrane’s basic design principles are still used in modern dishwashers.

Random Thoughts…

Don’t be redundant; don’t use more words than necessary; it’s highly superfluous.

What’s the definition of a will? It’s a dead giveaway.

The term “blueprint” is from the 19th century technique for copying technical drawings using a blue dye.

With her marriage she got a new name and a dress. It was an emotional wedding. Even the cake was in tiers.

Origin of city nicknames…

Tampa, Florida: ‘Cigar City’

Tampa’s reputation as ‘Cigar City’ dates to the late 19th century when, due to high import taxes on Havana cigars, many Cuban manufacturers moved their operations to Florida. These included Vicente Martinez Ybor who opened his factory near Tampa in 1885. Over the next three decades more than 200 others sprang up in the area, which was swiftly renamed Ybor City and became part of Tampa in 1887. At its peak the industry employed tens of thousands of people and produced more than 500 million cigars a year, propelling Tampa from a tiny town to a major metropolis.

Thoughts for the day

A nice winter day with very little breeze. Yesterday’s wind is gone.

I’m hoping for and planning for a nice week. Only a Dr. appointment for Friday.

A Rez friend and his family stopped by this morning. He just got a job in Phoenix and his family is taking him down there. Nice visit.

Inventions…

Frederick McKinley Jones - Refrigerated Trucks

Frederick Jones invented the first automatic refrigeration system for long-haul trucks in 1935. His portable cooling unit could be mounted on trucks and trains, allowing fresh food to be transported over long distances without spoiling. This invention made it possible to ship fresh food across the country and helped create the frozen food industry. Jones’ technology saved countless lives during World War II by preserving blood, medicine, and food for soldiers.

A group of Bloodhounds is called a Sute.

Dress well even for the small things- If you look good, you’ll feel good. Feel good, you’ll do well. Do well, you’ll succeed.

Audrey Hepburn – Real Name: Edda Hepburn Van Heemstra Ruston

If a pair of common house fly began reproduction in the month of April under optimal conditions, they could be progenitors of up to 191,010,000,000,000,000,000 flies by August.

Biggest film of 1989: Batman (Action) earned ~ $251,000,000

Origin of city nicknames…

Boise, Idaho: ‘City of Trees’

“Voyez les bois!” (See the woods!) cried the ecstatic French explorer Captain Bonneville when he spotted the tree-lined Boise River after a long, barren trek. Most Boise residents are familiar with this anecdotal explanation for how their city gained its nickname, but it might not be 100% correct. Others think it stemmed from French Canadian fur trappers active in the 1820s who named the tree-lined river that gave them relief from the hot, dry plains of southern Idaho ‘la riviere boisee’ (or ‘The Wooded River’). Whatever the true origin, it seems to fit.
