It was a cold night but now a nice day.

Yesterday I had an issue with my bank, Chase, regarding a compromised credit card number. This morning, I met with my personal banker and now all is good.

During the hearings today, it became clear that RFK, Jr. has few ideas of his own but will follow Trump on everything. That is scary.

In his executive order on birthright citizenship, he referenced the 1884 Elk v Wilkins supreme court decision that also stated that Indians were not citizens. That has upset the tribal leaders around the country.

They were devoted to extreme sports.

One of the most significant aspects of Mayan culture is its ball game, pitz. The game held important significance both politically and spiritually. Ballcourts are often important parts of Mayan archaeological sites, particularly in cities like Chichen Itza. 

The purpose of the game is to pass a rubber ball through a very high stone hoop without using their hands. But more than just for sport, the game had serious consequences. A loss sometimes resulted in human sacrifice.m Thoughts…

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: ‘Steel City’

Originally known for its iron foundries and coal mines, Pittsburgh underwent a significant transformation in 1875 when Andrew Carnegie established the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, which later became part of Carnegie Steel Company. This development marked the city's rise as a leading industrial powerhouse, eventually making Pittsburgh a global center of steel production. Although the city's steel output peaked in the early 20th century and began to decline in the 1970s, with much of the industry disappearing by the 1980s, Pittsburgh remains affectionately known as 'Steel City'. The Fort Wayne Railroad Bridge, among other landmarks, stands as a lasting symbol of this rich industrial heritage.

Snow is still expected. So far, not even enough to cover the ground.

It costs around $800,00/flight to use military planes to deport. A chartered plane would cost around $102,000 per flight. Military planes make much better pictures. Of the 1200 deported yesterday, about ½ had not committed any offense except crossing the border illegally.

Mayan Culture of Mexico and beyond…

An island Mayan city survived until the 17th century.

Long after other Mayan civilizations had been abandoned or destroyed, there was one that managed to survive until the 17th century. Known as Nojpeten or Tayasal, it was the capital city of the Itza Maya kingdom located in Lake Peten Itza in Guatemala. 

Today, travelers may know the town by the name of Flores. Approximately 2,000 people are thought to have lived in the city, and the current-day street plan of Flores is said to be based on the indigenous city's roots. It eventually fell to the Spanish in 1697.

Baltimore, Maryland: ‘Charm City’

There’s no doubt that Baltimore had an image problem in the 1960s. The combined effects of industrial decline and mass exodus to the suburbs saw it described as 'A loser’s town' or 'Yesterday town' in the press, much to the chagrin of Mayor William Donald Schaefer who created a marketing campaign to promote the city’s history and hidden treasures. The term 'Charm City' was coined in 1974 as part of this campaign, and although many locals dismissed the campaign, the name has become Baltimore’s most enduring nickname.

Thoughts for the day

Crazy weather day. It’s been sun…snow…sun…snow…sun all day. Nothing sticking yet but should be about 1” today if the weather guy is right.

Eagles v Chiefs is the super bowl. Will there be the first three peat for the NFL?

Our discussion group has a good calendar to work from. There is one member, a people-pleaser who really controls the group. She moved our meetings to the afternoon and added a dinner meal at a local restaurant after our meetings. This time she suggested My Pie, a local pizza place. She said how much she likes it, but one member found the pizza not that good. Before we ended up picking a burger place this lady mentioned that the last time she was there she remembered the pizza was not that good. She is a nice lady, but her people-pleasing can get tedious.

During my time with the government, I had a few occasions to work with the IG staff of the Bureau. The Inspector General’s deals with big legal matters. Trump’s firing of over a dozen IG’s may surpass his power and may not have the affect he expects.

I saw this rather frightening stat yesterday…46% of today’s American can not name even one of the German Concentration Camps of WWII.

Mayan Culture of Mexico and beyond…

Maya loved to sweat it out.

The Maya were known for their sweat lodges that were built out of stone or adobe. These lodges were integral to their ritual cleansing and healthcare. 

Archaeologists have found evidence of sweat houses at important sites like Tikal in Guatemala and Joya de Cerén in El Salvador. One of the earliest sweat lodges to be discovered was found at Cuello in Northern Belize and dates back 3,000 years.

Seattle, Washington: ‘Emerald City’

No, it has nothing to do with The Wizard of Oz. Seattle gets its nickname from the year-round abundance of evergreen trees, shrubs and moss that give the city its distinctive charm. With more than four million trees, over a quarter of the city is always shaded by foliage. The moniker is fairly recent, the result of a competition in 1982 which challenged the public to come up with a suitable nickname for the city. The winning entry described it as 'the jewel of the Northwest', and the name was quickly adopted by the city.
