Thoughts for the day

Another nice spring day.

I went out and got some grocery shopping done.

There is going to be an 18-hole miniature golf course right on Route 66. It’s about a mile from where I live and taking the place of the convenience store that closed about a year ago. The first 9-holes will be right on Route 66 with the other 9-holes behind the old convenience store. I hope this is one of those ‘build it and they will come’ things. When my brother and I were growing up there was a Putt-Putt miniature golf course on Wadsworth…a short bike ride from our home.

The winner of the Women’s Division Boston Marathon lives and trains here in Flagstaff. There are lots of marathon runners who train here…the 7000’ builds up their lungs.

Trump keeps his orders right up to the legal line. He has many awaiting deportations from a prison and even loaded the buses for the airport before they turned around and went back to the prison. They only had less than 12 hours to find due process. The ACLU found a federal judge to stop them from deporting.

Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security went to dinner with her extended family on Easter. She was carrying a $4,000 dollar bag with her Gov’t badge, driver’s license, credit cards, keys to her apartment, and $3,000 in cash. Even with her Secret Service protection, a guy walked up, picked up her bag and walked out of the restaurant with no one noticing. This incident should have concerned us all about security.

The Minoans: Crete, Greece ©Carole Raddato on Wikimedia

Minoans were masters of art, architecture, and trade. Their island civilization flourished from around 3000 BCE to 1450. They excelled as seafarers, establishing extensive trade networks across the eastern Mediterranean, including contacts with Egypt and the Near East. Also, their advanced palaces, such as Knossos, showcase their cultural sophistication.

The Salem witch trials involved burning witches

No one was burned at the stake during the Salem witch trials; most were hanged. The confusion comes from witches being burned at the stake in Europe as heretics. In the colonies, witches were accused of committing crimes against the government, which was a felony punishable by hanging. I guess all the drama of ‘Would she go up in a quick burst of smoke’ would be taken away if we put hangings in the movies.

Thoughts for the day

A nice spring day as it slowly warms up.

Saddened to hear of the passing of Pope Francis. I remember having lunch with our retirement group and the restaurant had a TV that was on. There was breaking news when the cardinals selected him. He was a compassionate man and will be missed.

If gang membership is illegal, why aren’t the Proud Boys and the KKK being deported.

The Scythians: Eurasian Steppes ©Dimitri Pozdniakov on Wikimedia

In 700 BCE, the Scythians were feared for their cavalry and renowned as master archers, roaming the vast Eurasian steppes. They dominated regions from Central Asia to Europe. Yet, despite their power and influence, their legacy seems to have faded into the background of history.

Taught in High School but not true…

Einstein failed math

If you were one of those kids encouraged to keep trying in school because ‘even Einstein failed at math,’ hopefully the encouragement worked, but it won’t in the future. “In 1984, a Princeton University team led by John Stachel prepared to publish Einstein’s papers. The group found evidence that Einstein was a kid genius who had conquered college-level physics by age 11 and was fluent in Latin and Greek. Stachel also found what he thought was the source of the Einstein math myth. Stachel told The New York Times that when Einstein was 16 and studying in Switzerland, he received grades of “1” in math on two straight report cards. On a scale of 1 to 6, “1” was the best. But then the school switched its system so that a “6” was the top grade given. At that point, Einstein got a “6,” which made it look like he was suddenly flunking math. He wasn’t—he was still getting the equivalent of an A.”

Thoughts for the day

A very nice Easter Sunday. Visiting friends later this afternoon.

There were over 1000 people at yesterday’s rally to stop the King. More people would have been nice. This is so different than the college protests of the early 1970’s…people are happy, no police presence. People who believe America is better than what is happening currently.

Our discussion group was excellent. When I started my graduate work, I learned about the difference between the melting pot and the salad bowl idea regarding culture. It made sense to me then and still does. Allowing every group to still be identified in the salad bowl rather than just melting into a grey slop seemed something to work for. After our discussion yesterday, I realized that there are people who still want the melting pot concept with every bone in their body. Many on the right simply want complete assimilation with no remnants of their first culture there. I can’t accept that this is best for our country. I am now more understanding about the fear they have that have…unless we are a grey slop, we must fear that some minorities will attempt to take away the power the Whites have.

The Kingdom Of Kush: Sudan ©Vit Hassan on Wikimedia

To the south of Egypt, Kush was the land of formidable pharaohs who governed both Egypt and Nubia. They built towering pyramids and created one of the most powerful empires in Africa. Ever heard of the "Kushite Dynasty"? These rulers left a lasting legacy in Egypt.

Dinosaurs looked like big lizards

I’ve questioned this one since I first learned about fossils, and still annoyingly comment on documentaries about species that have been extinct since long before mankind came to study them. How do we know the T. rex didn’t rock a mullet? Well, discoveries have shown that many dinosaurs had feathers, not just lizard-like skin. I’m sticking with my mullet theory until proven otherwise.
