Free Rambling Thoughts…

I ran some errands today. All the grocery stores had some great sales and I went to two to fill up my freezer and pantry for the summer. My dad would be proud. He taught me how to use sales to help my budget.

Martha thought her pickup was ready, but upon leaving the repair shop, discovered it wasn’t. They told her squirrels had partially chewed through a couple of hoses and when the radiator water got hotter and the pressure increased, the hoses popped. Not a bad deal, considering the other scenarios. Then, upon leaving she discovered it was missing really badly. Back to the shop and now they fear it is the head gasket. Still not the worst scenario, but certainly not the best either.

So in NY they had a special election for Representative in an historically Republican district. One lady said she would vote for the Ryan bill believing that Medicare is bad. The other lady said she would keep Medicare. She won. Many Dems see this as a sign. That could certainly add to the 2012 campaigns. I live in a Democratic district by numbers that keeps electing Republican Reps. Medicare arguments may change things here too.

Yeah, It Really Happened…

Eighteen-year-old Laurel Gordon of Elma, Wash., has been putting on a tiara to promote milk products the past two years as Grays Harbor County's dairy ambassador.

The funny thing is, she's a lactose intolerant dairy princess. The Daily World of Aberdeen reports that unless Gordon takes special pills, her body is unable to digest milk. She drinks soy milk.

But, her family operates a dairy farm that has been in the family for 150 years, and she believes in the product. She's competing for the Washington state dairy ambassador title in June.

A woman walked into the elevator tossing her keys up in the air and catching them. After one too many tosses, she dropped the keys, and we watched as they disappeared into the crack between the open doors and the floor.

I felt terrible for her. Or I did until she cried, "Oh no! Not again!"

Free Rambling Thoughts…

I went to the get a carotid artery ultrasound. It’s been 5 years, so guess it is time. Simple procedure…arch your head back while laying on a table. Get goo-ed up. Let the tech do her thing. Finished and out. More bucks for somebody, less for me.

Modern Technology has certainly changed storm chasing. All the devastation is being captured with cell phones and everything is making it to the news casts. So frightening. Never wanted to live in a tornado belt, and now I know why. Thoughts and prayers for all those in those devastated area.

Martha was headed for her bag pipe practice when her pick up died on I-40. AAA took an hour to get to her, and bring her vehicle back to Flag. I picked her up at the repair place and took her home. So frustrating to be stranded. All is well now, but tomorrow she finds out why it happened. Doesn’t sound good for the pick up—it lost power, died, and when she opened the hood, antifreeze was everywhere, but no broken hoses could be found. It would turn over, meaning it’s not the timing belt. Hopefully the engine didn’t seize. She had her two puppies with her, so that made it more frustrating. A friend from nearby picked her and the dogs up and brought her to Flag. I met them at the repair place and took her home.

Yeah, It Really Happened…

A Hartford teacher accused of forcing students to clean the classroom toilet with paper towels and a cleaner with bleach is on administrative leave.

For two years, Catherine Saur required any student who used the bathroom to clean the toilets, even if they only went to the bathroom to wash their hands, the Hartford Courant reports.

Jane Russell complained when her son had an allergic reaction to the cleaner and told her what his Kennelly School art teacher was requiring student to do in the bathroom of a portable classroom, the newspaper reports.

Principal Peter Dart sent a letter to parents on Monday that said the teacher had been requiring students to clean the bathroom for the past two years. He said he did not endorse or know about the practice before May 17, when it was reported to authorities.

Saur, reached by telephone at her home Tuesday morning, declined to comment to the Associated Press.

There is an emergency meeting at the school tonight, the Courant reports.

Free Rambling Thoughts…

A little windy for my taste today. It finally calmed down late this afternoon. Otherwise, a very good day.

The Republicans are going crazy. The head of the Senate said today that by privatizing Medicare, it will “empower grandma” to shop around for health insurance. What planet does this guy live on? No senior is going to feel ‘empowered’ when shopping for health insurance. I am a well educated, fairly savvy almost senior. I don’t even understand my current health insurance. When a friend turned 65 a few years ago, she asked me to help her figure out what supplement to buy. I looked through several brochures that had been sent to her by possible supplemental plans. It was mostly gibberish. I came down to guessing what your body was going to do for the next twenty years. Luckily, she is Native, and doesn’t need any supplemental plan. I am not going to have the option of no supplemental. There are so many ‘senior scams’ out there, forcing our elders to figure this out is outrageous. The Republicans have always been against any government program that was for everybody—Medicare, social security, affirmative action, Obamacare and the list goes on. It will be interesting to see what happens—since many Republicans are seniors and are using Medicare. They too know the problems of searching for coverage and now finding physicians who will accept Medicare patients.

After talking to Bob about Social Security, guess I need to make an appointment and find out exactly what I would get, if I take it. Sounds like it won’t be around for my super old age.

++ Viagra: This drug was accidentally created when Pfizer chemists were developing a pill to treat cardiovascular ailments. However, when it was tried out on test subjects, something came up (literally). The pill, later named Viagra and approved by the FDA in 1998, proved a bust in terms of treating heart disease, but its unexpected side effect opened the doors for a brand-new industry.

++ Corn Flakes: In 1894, while employed by the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg tried to find a way to provide a palatable and inexpensive meal to feed his charges. When he accidentally left some boiled wheat unattended, it went stale. He tried to save it by rolling it into dough, but discovered that it tore into pieces and refused to hold a shape. So he and his brother decided to toast the flakes...and the rest is history.

++ Microwave oven: When a Raytheon engineer was experimenting with a device called a magnetron back in 1945, he noticedthe candy bar in his pocket starting to melt. This gave him the inspiration to create the microwave oven, and the first version was released in 1947. However, at over five feet tall and costing roughly $5,000, it didn't really take off. In 1967, Amana, a Raytheon division, began selling sub-$500 versions intended for at-home kitchen use.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — A northeast Ohio couple found themselves up to their ankles in trouble for rafting on a flood-swollen river without life preservers and lying about it afterward.

A judge sentenced them to stand in a tiny swimming pool while wearing life jackets and handing out water safety brochures Saturday at a festival in Painesville, 30 miles northeast of Cleveland.

Twenty-year-old Grace Nash and 22-year-old Bruce Crawford pleaded guilty to misdemeanor misconduct during an emergency. Searchers spent hours looking for them last month after they were spotted on the Grand River. They made it to land but lied to an official about being in the water.

They chose the pool punishment and community service over 60 days in jail.

Nash tells The News-Herald in Willoughby they've learned their lesson.
