Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. To honor the deceased, soldiers would decorate graves of their fallen comrades with flowers, flags and wreaths. Hence Decoration Day. Although Memorial Day became its official title in the 1880s, the holiday wouldn't legally become Memorial Day until 1967.

After the Civil War, General John A. Logan, commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, called for a holiday commemorating fallen soldiers to be observed every May 30. But due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which took effect in 1971, Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday of May to ensure long weekends.

In December 2000, Congress passed a law requiring Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day to remember and honor the fallen.

In addition to the national holiday, nine states officially set aside a day to honor those who died fighting for the Confederacy in the Civil War: Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia. The days vary, but only Virginia observes Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday of May, in accordance with the federal observance of Memorial Day.

Sour Grapes

Andreas Flaten of Peachtree City, Georgia, quit his job at Walker Luxury Autoworks in November, visibly annoying his boss, he told WGCL-TV, but he was promised his final $915 paycheck would be paid in January. When the check didn't come, Flaten contacted the Georgia Department of Labor, and one night in mid-March, 500 pounds of oily pennies were anonymously dumped in his driveway, presumably totaling $915. Flaten has been storing them in a wheelbarrow, but they can't be cashed until they are cleaned. [WGCL, 3/16/2021]

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

A tad cloudy with no precipitation in the forecast. Our forest needs precipitation, but today will be OK. There was a total of 98 illegal campfires in the forest around Flagstaff during the long weekend. Idiots. This is the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre. This event was not in any of the curricula I knew through all my schooling. This horrific event should have been studied when I was in HS or College. Sad! A week ago, I bought some new bed pillows. Now that I have used them for a week, it was a great purchase. General Flynn is back in the news. I am in disbelief that he suggested a Myanmar-military-style coup would be good for the US. He has definitely drunk too much of Trump’s Kool-Ade. The judicial system needs to step in and investigate him. Today is the day in 1924 that ‘Indians’ were given citizenship in the US. Yesterday, in 1868, was the signing of the treaty that set up the Navajo Reservation.

Crazy Horse's nephew, Moses Clown, (right) and Irvin Munyon were from neighboring towns in South Dakota. Moses was killed ten days before armistice. He was the first soldier from South Dakota to die in combat during World War I. His mother, Crazy Horse's sister Iron Cedar became the first Gold Star mother in South Dakota as a result. We remember Moses on this Memorial Day.

Vietnam veteran Tom Garvey, 78, of Ambler, Pennsylvania, has released a new memoir, not about his service in Southeast Asia, but about the "secret apartment" he maintained for two years in an empty concession stand in Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, once home to both the Phillies and the Eagles, reported The Philadelphia Inquirer. From 1979 to 1981, Garvey lived in an "off-the-wall South Philly version of the Phantom of the Opera," he said, furnishing the apartment with a bed, sink, refrigerator, stereo, coffeemaker, hot plate and seating for guests, who included players' wives waiting for their husbands after games. Leftover Astroturf served as the carpeting. Cousin Terry Nilon said being in Garvey's apartment, located literally in leftfield, felt like "Vet stadium was in his living room." My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Sky is mostly overcast and there has already been a couple of 15-min rain showers with thunder included for free. The forest needs all the moisture it can get. There were 49 illegal campfires between Friday evening and Sunday evening in our forest. This rain should prevent the idiots from starting any more. Every year there are too many people who see the NO FIRES and assume it is meant for everyone else and not for them. Our forest is precious, and these people should be fined and forbidden to be in the forest for a year. It has been a good Memorial Day weekend for me. Some friends stopped by yesterday. It’s nice that people can actually visit my home again and not have to worry about masking up. They were all vaccinated, so it is all good.
