My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

No monsoon yesterday. Today is looks very promising.

Phone visit with my PCP. He is as confused as everyone about the CPAP issue. He did send a fax to the sleep center so I can call and make an appointment. He also said that his office is doing Moderna booster and I am eligible to get a booster. And I can get my annual flu shot at the same time. They will call as they need a list of 15 who can come in the same day. Each vial has 15 shot and only lasts for 12 hours after the first shot. He said it will probably be next week. Nice!

Afghan neighbors of the weekend drone bombing are saying the guy was a contractor, working for the US and that he and several of his young kids were killed as the drone blew up his vehicle as he pulled into his driveway. Sad. If true, heads need to roll for that.

Ida is causing lots of problems for many. In today’s world it is so difficult to live without electricity in your city. It seems the Louisiana rebuilding after Katrina made it less damaging. Good for them.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

A warm day with hopes the monsoon comes back later today. Yesterday’s shower was very nice

Last night’s discussion group went very well. Lots of participation made it much easier to present. The plan to arbitrarily draw country boundaries by the British at the height of their empire show that no matter how good the intentions, it just didn’t work. Fighting groups are still fighting based on a history of tribal like disagreements, many based on religion. So difficult to comprehend.

The National Religious Broadcasters, an evangelical nonprofit, has fired its Senior VP of Communications. The issue is that he went on CNN and encouraged people to get the vaccine. I guess he is lucky that he wasn’t stoned to death or burned at the stake as a heretic. I guess that is progress.

I watched the solemn moment when the 13 military coffins returned to the US. So very sad.

1890 President Benjamin Harrison signed the first U.S. law requiring inspection of meat products

1967 – Thurgood Marshall was confirmed as the first African American Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

According to Hoyle Day

In 1751, Edmond Hoyle published “A Short Trait on the Game of Prague,” which described rules for showing, winning, and losing certain hands dealt. Doyle’s “short treatise, game, and whist” not only contained rules but also gave many insights into the winning possibilities. When there was a dispute over the rules of a deck of cards, it was often referred to as the last resort. Hoyle’s book became so popular that rules for cards, table and board games became known as Hoyle books. Finally, in 1761, he published “Easy to make a game of chess, easy to learn when you know the moves, only and with the help of a master”.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

As promised, the monsoon has returned. It cooled things off nicely.

Our discussion group meets tonight. I will be leading a discussion on India & Pakistan Today. Lots of reading and some good updates. I learned a lot about the role of Pakistan in the Afghan mess. Should be a good evening.

AZ just passed the one million mark in Covid cases and mask mandates are still illegal. With a population of about 35 million, the is brilliant decisions in action…NOT!

I learned two new things about Afghanistan: 1:  when we closed the Bagram Air Base last month, there were 5000 detainees in prison there. Now they are all free. 2: In order to help with evacuations, the Taliban are being given names and locations of those trying to escape. How can this be a good move?

1967 – The Fugitive finale, on ABC, starring David Janssen as Dr. Richard Kimble, was the most-watched program of all time, until the 1980 series Dallas “who shot J.R.?” episode aired.

1991 – The Soviet Communist Party suspended all activities.
