We have lots of laws, not all of them good. But whether they intend to or not, many laws have very beneficial side effects Town laws in the U.S. Midwest in the 1880s were passed prohibiting the sale of ice cream sodas on Sunday. In Illinois, ingenious soda fountain owners got around the law by omitting the carbonated water and serving just the scoop of ice cream and the syrup. They called this a "Sunday Soda." Later the name was shortened to "sunday" and eventually just "sundae."

 

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

 

A windy fall day. Glad I don’t have to be out in the cold wind. I must say I am a little concerned over some of Biden’s off-the-cuff remarks. While I am disappointed by some of his embellishments in his ‘stories’, I am really concerned when he makes a statement that seems opposite of US policy. With the current tension between the US and China on many issues, including Taiwan, he needs to better understand the US position. I was fortunate to visit Taiwan some years ago with Focus Travel. The people are friendly, the food is great, and the scenery was magnificent. Since 1949 they have wanted to remain an independent country. This should not change. I am hoping that Biden will realize the damage his off-the-cuff statements bring and will be more Presidential. I have been aware of ‘sub-minimum wage for a long time. Most tipped restaurants workers receive sub-minimum wage ($2.15/hr.) + tips. Over the years, tips have shrunk, food prices have gone up, and this formula no longer works. Another area of sub-minimum wage is with the disabled. Many of them get ‘jobs’ at ‘sheltered workshops’ where they are to be trained to get ‘real’ jobs. Some pay these workers 20 cents/hr. to train them. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these workers never move to ‘real’ jobs. They remain in these low paying jobs for their ‘working’ career. We all need to be more educated on who has sub-minimum wage careers. We also need to tip better until this mess is straitened out.

The world's biggest spider is the goliath spider (Theraphosa blondi) lives in Northern South America. It can grow up to 11 inches wide, and its fangs are up to one inch long. It hunts frogs, lizards, mice, and even small snakes and young birds. The world's smallest spider is the Patu marplesi. It is so small that 10 of them could fit on the end of a pencil.

 

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

 

Nice fall day. Did some shopping and didn’t even need a light jacket while out and about. Nice! Yesterday worked out great. I met with my blood doctor on Wednesday afternoon and explained my predicament to get a phlebotomy…having to drive to Prescott. He called in a nurse. She then got on the phone with the VAT team at the Flag hospital, the ones who do the ultrasound, and worked out a deal where I go to the hospital lab, they insert the huge needle with ultra-sound. They tape it down; I drive a block to Cancer Center and they do the phlebotomy and remove the needle. It worked out just great. That saved me 3+ hours of driving. I am so grateful. There are many good people in this crazy world. Everyone knows that there is a shortage of workers in many parts of the economy…restaurants and fast-food places are especially hard hit. A new trend is to have robots do many of the jobs where it is hard to find workers. For example, being a fry cook is a hot, dirty, and boring job. So now robots are doing it in fast-food restaurants. In some sit-down restaurants, food is now put on stacked trays and the robot delivers it to the table. Sounds a tad too impersonal for me. Redlining in the 1930’s was the practice of keeping Blacks out of certain neighborhoods and turned many urban areas into little but cement buildings and sidewalks with few parks, grassy areas, and trees. A recent study of the average temperatures shows some startling information. In suburban areas with lots of trees, grass, and parks it is 13° cooler on average than urban settings with no parks, trees, or grass. So sad. In politics: Senator Manchin promised to get a bipartisan voting rights bill. He worked tirelessly for months. His bill was finally put up for a vote. The result of his bipartisan bill was ZERO Republicans voted for the bill. Then there is AZ senator Sinema who must deal with the resignation of 5 military vets on her office’s advisory board because she has ignored their recommendations and that she has gone back on many of her campaign promises. These two are holding up lots of legislation and now it looks like they are only helping the Republicans in the 2022 elections. So Sad. Gabby’s fiancé’s body has been found. Forensic science will now be the only clues to the death of both…unless the parents tell what they know.
