Trivia

The world's largest diamond was the Cullinan, found in South Africa in 1905. It weighed 3,106.75 carats uncut. It was cut into the Great Star of Africa, weighing 530.2 carats, the Lesser Star of Africa, which weighs 317.40 carats, and 104 other diamonds of nearly flawless color and clarity. They now form part of the British crown jewels.

Not all diamonds are white. Impurities lend diamonds a shade of blue, red, orange, yellow, green and even black. A green diamond is the rarest. It is not the rarest gemstone, however. That title goes to a pure red ruby. Diamonds actually are found in fair abundance; thousands are mined every year. 80% of them are not suitable for jewelry - they are used in industry. Only diamonds of higher clarity are sourced to the jewelry stores.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

It’s a cloudy fall day. Hoping the sun comes out soon.

The Rittenhouse trial is in Wisconsin. The news kept talking about 18 jurors. I was confused until I found out that just before deliberations the defendant pulls 6 pieces of paper from a drum. Those jurors are not in deliberations but are still kept in court in case they are needed. Interesting. I’m not sure how I would feel if I sat through a 2-week trial and then find out that I am not on the jury that decides. It is a good plan to prevent a mistrial if several jurors are not able to complete the trial.

Biden and Xi-Jinping had ‘a healthy debate’ with no breakthroughs according to Biden. They talked for almost 3-1/2 hours. I hope that this begins a thaw between the two countries. I enjoyed my short time in China a couple of years ago and hope to see more of China someday…but both governments have to agree to disagree on policy before that can happen easily. My hope spring eternal.

On November 17, 1968, an NFL game between the Oakland Raiders and the New York Jets ended with a Raiders win, 43 to 32. That happened by 7:07 PM. The problem was, NBC has scheduled and RAN the movie Heidi at 7:00. There was still over a minute left to play, and the TV audience never got the chance to see two Raider Touchdowns in just 65 seconds. #heidigame #heidibowl

Trivia

A diamond is the hardest natural substance on earth, but if it is placed in an oven and the temperature is raised to about 1405 degrees Fahrenheit, it will simply vanish, without even ash remaining. Only a little carbon dioxide will have been released.

A diamond is 58 times harder than the next hardest mineral on earth, corundum, from which rubies and sapphires are formed. It was only during the 15th century that it was discovered that the only way to cut diamonds was with other diamonds. Yet, diamonds are brittle. If you hit one hard with a hammer, it will shatter.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

A decent fall day. I took a nice walk around the neighborhood.

The Broncos and the Cards each fell very short yesterday…on their home turf. Still early in the season.

The supply chain remains a mess. 60 Minutes did a good job of explaining what is happening and what will fix it. My takeaways: Many are making bundles of cash in storage space charges. Ports are owned by cities who decided who can and can’t enter, shippers are private businesses, and Federal government can’t do much to unclog the system. It is local governments, and private enterprise that must figure this mess out.

For the past many months, I have been following Bearsun on his walk from LA to NYC. His walk is to raise money and awareness for the disabled, cancer research, mental health, autism, and environment. Many others have been following his walk on Instagram and Facebook. He finished his walk yesterday in Times Square. While donations are still trickling in after he finished, his friend announced that each of the 5 charities got about $16,000. Very cool. Bearsun’s picture is in the ‘favorite memes’ section above.
