Today’s Thoughts

A little cloudy. The weather guy keeps saying it is an early monsoon, but all happening are a few drops on my dusty car to make it a mess.

A whistleblower about the Mormon Church (LDS) was on 60 Minutes last night. It seems that the church may not be properly reporting requirements of churches regarding $100 Billion in assets. It is time the IRS and Congress review the law regarding all church’s IRS exemption from paying taxes. There are way too many ‘Mega-Churches’ that line their pockets with the IRS exemption. I get the separation of church and state, but many in the church group are getting rich off their members. That is not what Christ teaches.

The writer’s strike continues. Some of my live shows are not on TV due to the strike. I miss SNL and Real Time. Settle the strike.

Facebook has me totally confused. The have put me in Facebook jail for 24 hours for ‘breaking community standards.’ I tried to find out which post was concerning. Can’t find out. The only post I made before the notice I had broken rules was my Mother’s Day greeting yesterday morning. I can still comment on posts, I can still post, and sometimes I can use an emoji on a post, sometimes I get a reminder that I broke their standards and can’t use the like emoji, but can use the WOW emoji. Very frustrating.

Origins of State Names

New Jersey

The name New Jersey is the result of a breakup, but not the romantic kind. In 1664, when the British seized the colony of New Netherland from the Dutch, the land was divided in half, with the east side granted to English statesman George Carteret. He had once served as governor of the Isle of Jersey, an island in the English Channel, and named the colony after it. Given its namesake, it only makes sense that New Jersey also borders the waters of the Atlantic, albeit many thousands of miles away.

• 1866 – The United States Congress established the 5-cent nickel.
• 1918 – The Sedition Act of 1918 is passed by the U.S. Congress, making criticism of the government during wartime an imprisonable offense.
  It was repealed on December 13, 1920.
• 1951 – The first regularly scheduled transatlantic flights began, between Idlewild Airport (now John F Kennedy International Airport) in New York City and Heathrow Airport in London.

Today’s Thoughts

Cloudy and hoping for the first monsoon of the season.  Weather guy says there’s a good chance for rain.

My brother and his wife posted some pictures of their recent huge rain and windstorm. Everybody and the dogs survived it. There was a big mess of green branches around the property. One of the 6’ trees by the pool was blown into the pool. The pool had several dozen frogs after the storm…the frogs survived but the tree didn’t. Power at the hacienda and around town was out for about 24 hours. The pictures are at rwf33 on Instagram.

My graduating class has a Facebook site to keep us up-to-date on reunions and other class information on members. It has been up for years. Recently it has been inundated with advertisements to buy T-Shirts and other paraphernalia. It is always by non-classmates which takes you to various websites to buy junk. The company has ‘borrowed’ pics from the website to entice us, while the stuff has no pictures, just Class of ’67 on a generic background. It is very annoying.

Origins of State Names

Nevada
Nevada’s name actually comes from a mountain range primarily located in nearby California. The Sierra Nevada mountains were named such by Spanish explorers who discovered the area in awe during the 1770s and came upon the snow-covered peaks. Sierra is Spanish for “mountain range,” and nevada means “snowfall.” Nevada wouldn’t be comprehensively explored until the 1820s, at which point the groundwork was laid for the modern gambling and entertainment mecca we know it as today.

Great day. I took a long walk around the neighborhood before starting laundry.

It’s graduation weekend with the community college and the University holding multiple graduation ceremonies on their individual campuses. Thankfully, both are on the west side of town, far from where I live. Residents know to avoid the west side of town all weekend.

I want to wish all the mothers out there a very Happy Mother’s Day. Also, to the single Dad’s who are raising children. I do miss the joy of getting something for my mom on this day. That’s why I donate to one of her favorite charities in her name on this day.

Tipping is getting out of hand. I heard a story this morning that a chain store is using self-check-out and is now giving its customers who use self-check-out to tip the business for the convenience of self-check-out. Seriously, deduct a percentage amount from my bill for using the self-check-out and not stealing anything.

Mother’s Day

The history of American Mother's Day starts with peacemaker Ann Jarvis. During and following the Civil War, Ann Jarvis made a concerted effort to foster friendship and community between the mothers on both sides of the war. She started a committee in 1868 which established the first glimmer of today's holiday: "Mother's Friendship Day."
Ann's daughter Anna continued her legacy by creating the official holiday. Anna Reeves Jarvis sought to honor her own mother by establishing an intimate day of observance that is very obviously the basis of today's holiday. The very first Mother's Day was celebrated in 1908.
Woodrow Wilson signed Mother's Day into law in 1914. After Anna Jarvis created the Mother's Day International Association in order to streamline the intimate day of observance to the second Sunday in May, Woodrow Wilson legitimized the celebration as a nationwide holiday.
Mother's Day is the third highest selling holiday for flowers and plants. After Christmas and Hanukkah, more people buy flowers and plants for their moms on Mother's Day than any other holiday. Around approximately one quarter of all the flowers purchased throughout the year are bought for Mother's Day.
Carnations have a special meaning on Mother's Day. Anna Reeves Jarvis used the carnation on Mother's Day to symbolize whether your mother was living. A red carnation meant she was, and a white meant she had passed. Mother's Day is celebrated all over the world. Albeit on different days. But in addition to the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, Costa Rica, Samoa, Georgia, Australia, and Thailand all have designated celebrations to honor their country's mothers.
One of the earliest Mother's Day celebrations was in Ancient Greece. The Greeks would have spring celebrations in honor of Rhea, the goddess of fertility, motherhood, and generation.
Some countries still observe ancient festivals honoring mothers. In India, people celebrate Durga-puja, a festival that pays homage to the mother goddess, Durga. The festival is a ten-day event that takes place around September or October.

Ocean Trivia

The killer whale with a falsely incriminating name belongs to the oceanic dolphin family. Also known as an orca, they have black bodies with a white underside and patches near the eye.

Origins of State Names

Nebraska

Like many states throughout the Great Plains, the name Nebraska comes from a Native American term. In this case the word nebrathka comes from the Otoe people, and means “flat water,” a reference to the region’s Platte River. Nebraska likely owes its modern name to American explorer and politician John C. Frémont, who used the river’s Native name in a report to the Secretary of War. Fear not, though, there’s no warring with the state’s borders. Nebraska is a peaceful place nestled perfectly in the center of this great nation we call home.
