Great summer day.

I had lunch with Mary & Mike today. Faith is still recovering so she and Andy didn’t join us.

The ‘experimental’ submersible has been found. It suffered a catastrophic implosion on its way down. The entire crew was lost. Not the outcome the world hoped for. While all 5 adventurers knew this was possible, none expected this.

The Writer’s strike has lasted 53 days. Live programing is missed for sure.

History revisited

The Tulsa Race Massacre left thousands of Black citizens homeless.

With over 800 injured and an immeasurable amount of deaths, the Tulsa race massacre of 1921 is considered the single worst incident of racial violence in American history by the Oklahoma Historical Society. The incident began when a 19-year-old Black man was accused of assaulting a 17-year-old white female in an elevator. A mob of more than 2,000 white residents gathered demanding justice for the supposed crime and began attacking Tulsa which was then known as the Black Wall Street of America.

Around 10,000 Black citizens were left homeless with $1.5 million in property and $750,000 in personal damage done. This vibrant and successful Black neighborhood was leveled within days leaving no trace of its progressive former self. The incident is rarely ever mentioned in schools across America.

Great weather to start Summer.

I finally found time for a much-needed pedicure. I should have done it 2 weeks ago, but my cold prevented that. Feel good to have trimmed toenails.

The submersible is still out there, somewhere. Time is running out.

Taiwan is using the Ukraine model to deal with China. I can only hope it works before a Chinese invasion. 60 Minutes did a great story on life on Taiwan as China is threatening the tiny island.

History revisited

Puerto Rican women were used as birth control test subjects.

In order to receive FDA approval and bring their oral contraceptive to the market in the 1950s, Gregory Pincus and John Rock needed to conduct a large-scale human study. But rather than go through the proper channels, they decided to take a short cut through Puerto Rico.

According to PBS, the duo traveled to the U.S. territory and solicited poor, uneducated women to participate in their trial. Though the trial's researcher noted that the pill was 100% effective, she also reported numerous side effects like bloating and nausea, which Pincus and Rock reportedly felt were minor compared to the benefits. Additionally, three women died during the trial.

First day of summer looking good.

Yesterday I needed a scan. I was told to be there at 1:00 for a 1:30 appointment. I wasn’t seen until 2:00 and then had to wait another hour for the dye to work. I didn’t get out until 4:15. I had told them I needed an ultra-sound for the dye. The guy came in, told me that everyone who came in wanted an ultra-sound, but he didn’t need it. He was really snaky. He said it would be at least another hour for an ultra-sound. I let him go ahead. He couldn’t find a vein in my arm, but said he found one in my hand. He injected the dye. When I was leaving I noticed that I still had a big bump. He said it would go away by morning. His skill was a ‘7’ out of ten. His personality was a ‘-5” out of 10. I didn’t get home until almost 5p.

I’m not a big golf fan but I did hope that Rickie Fowler, a Navajo would win as he was at -10 on the final day. He didn’t win and ended up -5 at the end.

We are still in having a Red-Flag warning today. Over the weekend there were 4 small forest fires within the city limits, all caused by transients. Also over the weekend, a tourist fell from the Grand Canyon Skywalk. He fell 4000’ to his death.

It is not looking very hopeful for the 5 on the submersible that was exploring the Titanic. Each tourist had paid ¼ million dollars for the planned 3 hour view.

History revisited

The government created a relocation program that forced Native Americans out of their home.

Not all (if any) Native Americans moved to urban areas by choice. The Indian Relocation Act of 195, which dissolved federal recognition of most tribes and ended federal funding for reservations, made it difficult for families to stay on land that was rightfully theirs, according to the Atlantic.

A windy Sunday with Fire Watch conditions.

ISIS massacred students at a Uganda dorm school. I visited Uganda years ago to see the Mountain Gorilla. We also visited a couple of schools. This massacre is so senseless and heart breaking.

The Fire Watch conditions will continue until Monday evening. These high wind conditions only exacerbate the fire conditions. Flagstaff has already had a couple of small transient-caused fires this weekend.

History revisited

An item of clothing prompted assaults in the 1940s.

In the 1940s, Zoot Suits — a loose fitting pair of pants and jacket — were commonly worn by Latino, Black, and other men of color, according to the Smithsonian website. But what some saw as a fashion statement, many saw as an insult towards America and its soldiers, given the wartime rations on fabric.

As a result, the summer of 1943 was filled with attacks of members of these minority communities in Los Angeles, according to History. In an effort to stop the attacks, the Los Angeles City Council issued a ban on Zoot Suits.

 Another Great Spring Day!

An adult male black bear attacked and killed a 65-year-old Prescott man on his porch. The attack was seemingly unprovoked. The bear was killed by officers.

Interesting…The No Labels Party wants to run a mixed ticket in 20245, one Democrat, one Republican. I think we’ve tried 3^rd party before, this time it sounds different. I’ll wait and see if this continues to play out.

They were able to start over, living under false names so as to protect their identities and past.
