Today’s Thoughts

Awaiting today’s monsoon to cool things off.  Ahhh…nice rain about 2pm

I learned that Urban heat islands, where there is no greenery…just cement and asphalt, can have an ambient temperature 30° hotter than parks and tree lined streets. Everyone needs to plant more trees.

Niger had a coup that has ended, at least temporarily their democracy. Sad to see that happen.

Enjoy

History you may not have learned in school…

The government created a relocation program that forced Native Americans out of their home.

Not all (if any) Native Americans moved to urban areas by choice. The Indian Relocation Act of 195, which dissolved federal recognition of most tribes and ended federal funding for reservations, made it difficult for families to stay on land that was rightfully theirs, according to the Atlantic.

Hoax proved wrong…

Paul McCartney is dead!

An urban legend surfaced in 1966 alleging that Paul McCartney had died in November of that year and had been replaced by a dopplegänger. The rumor was further fueled in 1969 when 'Abbey Road' was released: the album cover shows the Beatle barefoot and out of step with the rest of his band mates— an image supposedly representing a corpse—while the number plate of the VW in the photo contains the characters LMW 28IF, with "28IF" indicating McCartney’s age "if" he had still been alive.

Random Trivia…

During the Victorian period, it was normal to photograph loved ones after they died. People would dress their newly-deceased relatives in their best clothing and then put them in lifelike poses and photograph them. They did this to preserve one last image of their dead loved one!

Historic Events

  • 1945 – The USS Indiana was torpedoed and sank. Only 318 of 1,196 crewmen survived.
  • 1954 – The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien was published.
  • 1958 – NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) was established.

History you may not have learned in school…

An item of clothing prompted assaults in the 1940s.

In the 1940s, Zoot Suits — a loose fitting pair of pants and jacket — were commonly worn by Latino, Black, and other men of color, according to the Smithsonian website. But what some saw as a fashion statement, many saw as an insult towards America and its soldiers, given the wartime rations on fabric.

As a result, the summer of 1943 was filled with attacks of members of these minority communities in Los Angeles, according to History. In an effort to stop the attacks, the Los Angeles City Council issued a ban on Zoot Suits.

Hoax proved wrong…

Royal look-alike

Anna Anderson (pictured) claimed she was Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the Romanov family (Russian tsar Nicholas II, the empress, and their five children), who were executed in 1918 by Bolshevik revolutionaries. In 1921, the Anastasia look-alike was admitted to a hospital, where she claimed she was the daughter who escaped the massacre. In 1938, she filed an unsuccessful suit to try and prove her identity. She died in 1984. The Romanov family remains were eventually located and DNA taken. None matched Anderson’s, who herself was later identified as a Polish factory worker named Franziska Schanzkowska.

Random Trivia…

During the Great Depression, people made clothes out of food sacks. People used flour bags, potato sacks, and anything made out of burlap. Because of this trend, food distributors started to make their sacks more colorful to help people remain a little bit fashionable.

Historic Events

  • 1540 – Thomas Cromwell was executed at the order of Henry VIII of England on charges of treason.
  • 1868 – The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified.
  • 1973 – At the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, nearly 600,000 people attend a rock festival at the Watkins Glen International Raceway.
  • 1996 – The remains of a prehistoric man were discovered near Kennewick, Washington. (The Kennewick Man)

Today’s Thoughts

Just after noon the clouds began dropping nice monsoon rain on our land. Nice!

Yesterday’s lunch with my retired financial advisor was very good and lasted almost 2 hours. She is doing well in S. Carolina, but wishes she was in Flagstaff again. She said as a widowed female, she doesn’t really ‘fit-in’ with the culture there. She has some female friends, but holidays and most social things are ‘for family only’. She also recounted that she had a medical procedure on her leg here in Flagstaff. The cost was $45, billed to insurance. She had the exact same procedure in SC and Medicare was billed $7,000 which Medicare rejected, leaving her with the bill. She fought with Medicare, then got the codes used on the AZ procedure and sent them to Medicare. Medicare paid the new bill in full and said that it was a coding error. She believes it was fraud.

Hunter and family got a big surprise when the judge did not accept the plea agreement as written. It is being reworked. Addition sure leads to problems for the user and the user’s family.

One hundred protesters started out at Tel Aviv on a 4-day walk to Jerusalem to demonstrate against the new Judicial Rules. In that 4-day walk, the protesters grew to almost 20,000.

Yesterday Biden and Harris dedicated the Emmett Till/Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument at 3 sites, the river where his body was discovered, the District Courthouse where the killers were found not-guilty, and the church were Emmett Till’s funeral changed the Civil Rights Movement. It was dedicated on the 82nd anniversary of Emmett’s birth. Good move.

Glad the union and managers found a solution that will prevent a UPS strike. That is great news.

Enjoy

History you may not have learned in school…

Hundreds of Nazis fled to America after WWII.

According to NPR, hundreds of Nazis settled in the United States after the war. According to the book and review, many entered the country one by one and served as spies for American intelligence officials. They were able to start over, living under false names so as to protect their identities and past.

HOAX proved wrong…

The Berlin Wall

"Nobody has the intention of building a wall," insisted East German head of state Walter Ulbricht in June 1961. Two months later, work began on what was to become the Berlin Wall. It stood as a symbol of division and oppression until finally being torn down in 1989.

Random Trivia…

In 1386, a pig was executed in France. In the Middle Ages, the pig attacked a child who went to die later from their wounds. The pig was arrested, kept in prison, and then sent to court where it stood trial for murder, was found guilty, and then executed by hanging!

Historic Events

  • 1886 – The Atlantic Telegraph Cable was laid between Ireland and Canada.
  • 1921 – Insulin was first isolated by Dr. Frederick Banting.
  • 1953 – The Korean War Armistice ended the Korean War.
