A nice fall day.

Our town has many controlled burns every fall. Every day is a little smoky. Today is not so bad.

The big vote around here is building a new hospital. It would be built of the far west side, near our county fair grounds…just inside the city limits in area with no commercial infrastructure. Both sides are spending big bucks in TV, newspaper, and internet ads. The pro-side sent out a flyer, claiming the local school district supported the new hospital. Just as they started arriving in the mailboxes, the District put out a statement that the district has not taken any stand and demanded a cease and desist order including that another flyer be sent out stating that the district did NOT have a stance on the hospital. It is a mail-in ballot that closes Nov. 7. I expect some lawsuits after the election results are public.  Dirty politics in our little mountain town.

Chilly morning has warmed up nicely.

I had my second PT today. It went well. My pain level is now 0.5. Improving every day. Next session is next Friday. I tried to investigate the Silver Sneakers Program, but the person in charge was off today. They will call me.

A friend has one of those huge Ford pickups. Not dually but big. The warranty ran out several years ago. He bought CAR SHEILD when soon after @ $70/month. He took it to his mechanic & then to the dealership and both told him that CAR SHEILD doesn’t cover the parts he needed. He was told at both places that CAR SHEILD really only covers about 60% of the vehicle. The cost he had to pay was $925 to get it fixed. Beware of those much-advertised companies with vehicle breakdown coverage. When he called the company, they said they would drop his $70/month to $60/month. He declined to accept and cancelled his coverage. Now he is depositing the $70/month into a saving account and will use it if the truck breaks down.

Facts that seem made up Trivia…

Brain surgery happened before the written word was invented

Probably one of the most difficult jobs in the world is that of a brain surgeon. Performing surgery on the brain is nearly as complex as the brain itself, so one would assume the practice is relatively new. However, at the root of it, "brain surgery" has been happening for several millennia.

Known as "trepanning," people have been surgically cutting into skulls dating as far back as the New Stone Age. The written word wasn't even around until 3400 BC, making it far older! However, motivations to do so were far different than they are now. People who suffered from mental illness would be "operated on," as it was believed that cutting into the skull would release the pressure on the brain that was causing the illness. Of course, without scientific medical knowledge, it is estimated that only 40 percent of people who received trepanning surgery actually survived.

I had a good lunch with Andy & Faith. Good food, great conversation. I learned about my I-watch as they both have different models. We are all happy with the one we have.

Facts that seem made up Trivia…

Nintendo and the Ottoman Empire existed at the same time

Another time warp that we can't really get our heads around is the fact that Nintendo existed at the same time as the Ottoman Empire. When we think of Nintendo, images of video games like Super Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon flash before our eyes, but in reality, Nintendo as a company was established long before the advent of video games. Founded in 1889, Nintendo is actually one of the oldest companies in the world.

The Ottoman Empire was first founded in 1299, and because of this, when we think back to its existence, we remember it as practically ancient. However, the empire existed for over 600 years, lasting all the way until 1922. This means that there is an overlap of 33 years between the Ottoman Empire and Nintendo!
