My Free Rambling Thoughts

Very warm day and great for a nice walk around the neighborhood. Lots of summer traffic on 89—heading in and out of Flagstaff.

Heard some interesting things about the difference between the Taliban and Al Qaeda and the role of Qatar. Neither group is good. Both are terrorists. Al Qaeda is a worldwide group that began with the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. It has called for a global jihad. They have attacked military and civilian targets throughout the world. The Taliban is also from Afghanistan and was the central government of Afghanistan when the US invaded and toppled their government. While they are supported by Pakistan and others, their attacks have all been in Afghanistan. Their attacks have been against their own people and the US invaders.  Both believe in Sharia law. Qatar is one of the Arab Emirates. The US military strategic base for the Arab Gulf is in Qatar. They are the world’s largest holder of Natural Gas. They are a constitutional monarchy and their law is based on civil law and Sharia law. As of 2013 Qatar had the world’s highest GDP and about 14% of the citizens are millionaires. I wish that some of the loud conservatives would better explain their position on all of this.

Common misused words...

Imply and infer
The speaker or writer implies. The listener or reader infers. Imply means to suggest, while infer means to deduce (whether correctly or not.) So, I might imply you're going to receive a raise. You might infer that a pay increase is imminent. (But not eminent unless the raise will be prominent and distinguished.)

Pen Names of famous authors…

Charles Dickens  Pen name: Boz
During his early career in the 1830s, English author Charles Dickens wrote a series of journalistic pieces and drawings that were collectively published under the title "Sketches by Boz." The name Boz, according to numerous accounts, is a reference to Dickens's younger brother Augustus, whom he had nicknamed "Moses." When spoken with a stuffy nose, "Moses" became "Boses," which, in turn, became "Boz," a name Dickens used for several years, causing great mystery among his readers.

Yeah, It Really Happened

LUFKIN, Texas (UPI) - Texas police are still investigating to see if they can hook anyone with charges after an alleged fish-slapping incident over the weekend. During the incident in Lufkin, a woman supposedly slapped her sister-in-law in the face with a dead catfish. Officers from the Lufkin Police Department responded after receiving a call about a domestic disturbance early Sunday morning. "The argument allegedly started because a female put a catfish in her sister-in-law's face," Sgt. Mike Shurley said, according to KTRE. "An argument then ensued between the woman and her brother, which turned physical. According to the brother, his sister slapped his wife in the face with the fish, and he told her to leave, and eventually she did." All three people who were involved gave statements to police. According to Shurley, the woman told police that her brother had been beating his wife, a claim that he denied. The man at the scene was arrested on an outstanding warrant, KETK reported. No other arrests were made and no charges have been filed involving the catfish at this time. "Due to lack of independent witnesses and conflicting stories, the case has been forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation," Shurley said.

Somewhat Useless Information

Horses that seem wild today (such as Mustangs) are actually feral horses, usually descendants of horses that were imported to America from Spain in the sixteenth century. The only true wild horse is the Asian Wild Horse.
**
There are nearly 160 distinctive breeds and types of horses around the world, but the Arabian horse is unique in that it is the purest of all of the breeds.
**
After horses became domesticated around 4000 B.C., many Indo-European cultures regarded horses as a supreme sacrifice to their gods and often ritually entombed horses.
Famous owner/horse partnerships that helped change world history include Alexander the Great and his horse Bucephalus ("ox head"), El Cid and Babieca ("stupid"), and Napoleon and Marengo (named after a battle) who after its death, had its skeleton displayed in London.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site has mistakes and sadly once out the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
