My
Rambling Thoughts
Word to the Wise re: Netflix…set a limit to the number of movies
to watch in a 24 hr period. Those who fail to follow this advice, prepare to
spend some late nights in front of the TV. My normal bedtime is 10pm, but with
Netflix, I’m sometimes up until 2a. Great movies though.
I expected a quiet day, but about 8a Mary called and said wanted
to know if I would like to go with her to the Greek Festival here in Flag. It
was a small gathering but great food. Little did I know that the Greek Orthodox
Church is renting the downtown Catholic Church
for its services. The Catholic Church moved its services to a new church
between downtown and East Flag. Then I read in today’s paper that the former
East Flag Catholic Church is being sold to a charter school. Guess I am not
keeping up with the religious community of Flag.
The weatherman predicted possible rain showers and luckily they
didn’t come until I was back home. Sure smells nice right now.

On the 16th our Mexican population fittingly celebrated the
Mexican holiday that corresponds to our 4th of July. There was a grand ball at
the Majestic on Wednesday evening with music by the Domas Brothers. It was a
highly pleasant and enjoyable occasion.

**NEW**Halloween
Facts…
-Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget,
they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael
Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner
initially didn’t know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out years
later, he said he was honored.
-The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips.
-Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after
Christmas.
Law
Facts…
-In 1970, Richard Nixon signed the Controlled Substance Act into
law, making DMT and many other substances illegal. However, DMT is produced
naturally by the body, and found in a multitude of human bodily fluids and
tissues. Essentially, this makes all humans illegal.
-In the Bemba tribe of southern Africa, if someone does something
hurtful, they take the person to the center of the town where the entire tribe
comes and surrounds them. For two days they tell him every good thing he has
ever done, because they believe that every person comes into the world as good.
Rules of
Thumb…
HIRING
HELP FOR A PARTY
You need 1 waiter
per 10 guests for a buffet supper or 3 waiters per 20 guests for seated dinner
service. For receptions or cocktail parties, you will need 1 bartender, 1
kitchen helper (a waiter may double in this function), and 1 waiter per 50
guests. For more than 50 guests, you will need a supervisor as well.
Unusual
Fact of the Day…
Tuesday
is the most popular day of the week for giving birth. Part of that factor has
nothing to do with Nature and everything to do with hospital staffing; elective
C-sections and induced labors are often scheduled during traditional working
hours.

Joke-of-the-day
Two roofers, Larry and Joe were on the roof
laying tile, when a sudden wind gust came and knocked down their ladder.
“I have an idea” said Larry. “We’ll throw you
down, and then you can pick up the ladder.”
“What, do you think, I’m stupid?”
“I have an idea” said Joe. “I’ll shine my
flashlight, and you can climb down on the beam of light.”
“What, do you think I’m stupid?”
“You’ll just turn off the flashlight when I’m
halfway there.”
Yep, It
Really Happened
TAIYUAN, China
(UPI)
A Chinese man donned a cartoon bear costume to conceal his
identity when he claimed an $87 million lottery jackpot. The man dressed in the
yellow bear suit Monday morning when he visited the Shanxi province facility to
collect his $85 million winnings, the third-largest jackpot in the history of
the Shanxi lottery, and he kept the costume on when he spoke to the media. The
mystery winner said he spends $3,200 to $4,900 on lottery tickets each year. He
said he plans to donate some of his winnings to charity. The man is not the
first in China to don a costume to keep his identity a secret when claiming a
lottery prize -- a person dressed as Mickey Mouse collected a $65 million
jackpot in August.

you know that saffron is the most expensive spice in the world? A pound of
saffron costs more than a pound of gold.
The
saffron crocus, probably descends from Crocus cartwrightianus, which
originated in Crete.
The Minoans portrayed
saffron in their palace frescoes by 1600–1500 BC; they hint at its possible use
as a therapeutic drug.
-Did
you know that in Saudi Arabia there are no movie theatres and that producing
movies there is religiously prohibited?
A
Saudi Arabian documentary film “Cinema 500 km”, premiered in 2006, depicted the
story of a 21-year-old Saudi, who travelled 500 kilometers
to Bahrain to see a movie in a cinema for the first time in his life!
-Did
you know that the name of the first President of Zimbabwe was Canaan Banana and
that he held his presidency from 1980 to 1987?
However,
because of his funny name, a law was passed in 1982 forbidding citizens
from making jokes.
Banana
died in 2003 and was buried without the full honors that are traditionally
accorded to former heads of state.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet
sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned
that every site contains mistakes and sadly once the information is out there,
many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events
occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be
totally accurate.
