Birthdays Today: ♫
How many can you identify? Answers below in Birthday’s Today
My
Rambling Thoughts
Ahh, no controlled burn today. Blue sky, more blue sky, and more
blue sky.
This weekend is NAU’s homecoming. Lots of visitors around town.
Lots of alumni too. Lots of traditions abound around the town.
I got a great map a few years ago. It is a world map where a
traveler can scratch off the countries that have been visited. With all my
rearranging, I finally had a place, in the staircase, to put it, thanks to
those Command picture holders. Pretty cool. While I certainly have done a great
deal of travel in my lifetime, much of the world is left to still uncover. In
time, I guess, in time. I am only uncovering countries where I have spent more
than two days…touchdowns and plane changes don’t count on my map as I didn’t
meet any of the people.
So sad to hear there was another school shooting. I must say, it
is a sad commentary, from my point of view, that they are identifying the
shooter as ‘Native American’. Our country’s citizens will never learn about the
various tribes unless the tribes are identified, even in a sad situation like this.

Halloween
Facts…
-Halloween has variously been called All Hallows’ Eve, Witches
Night, Lamswool, Snap-Apple Night, Samhaim, and Summer’s End.
-Halloween was influenced by the ancient Roman festival Pomona,
which celebrated the harvest goddess of the same name. Many Halloween customs
and games that feature apples (such as bobbing for apples) and nuts date from
this time. In fact, in the past, Halloween has been called San-Apple Night and
Nutcrack Night.
-Scottish girls believed they could see images of their future
husband if they hung wet sheets in front of the fire on Halloween. Other girls
believed they would see their boyfriend’s faces if they looked into mirrors
while walking downstairs at midnight on Halloween.

Joke-of-the-day
There was a hysterical call at the fire
department, and it went like this: Help me, please help me; there is a cat
meowing and yowling with frequency and urgency. It is going to hurt me, it's
going to kill me; can you please help me, and send the fire squad right away?
Take it easy, cats don’t hurt us, just relax wait until he leaves.
You don’t understand it is going to bite me, it is going to kill me; it is
going to be fatal!
Cats aren’t like snakes or spiders that are poisonous, by the way who is
calling?
I’m Josephine’s parrot you jerk! Help me please, please help!
Yep, It
Really Happened
If you love something, set it free. If it doesn't return, try to
climb down its chimney and MAKE it love you!
That might have been what one woman was thinking when she was discovered stuck
in the chimney of a Southern California house and had to be rescued.
Ventura County fire Capt. Ron Oatman says firefighters responding to neighbors'
reports of a woman crying had to chisel away much of the chimney and lubricate
it with dish soap Sunday to free 30-year-old Genoveva Nunez-Figueroa.
She was arrested on suspicion of illegal entry and giving false information to
police.
Police say Nunez-Figueroa knows the owner of the home, who wasn't there at the
time. They wouldn't elaborate, but according to video the homeowner identified
the woman as someone he met online and had dated. He told local news that he
cut off their relationship.
She had no clear injuries but was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
"I hope she gets help, I hope she stays offline," he said.
Somewhat
Useless Information
Did
you know that “The Starry Night” (1889) by Vincent Van Gogh is among the most
popular paintings in the world? Van Gogh created it while he was in the asylum
of Saint Remy.
“Looking
at the stars makes me dream. I wonder why we can’t reach all shiny signs in the
sky, as easily as the black ones on the map of France. In the same way we get
the train to go to Tarascon or Rouen, why not getting death as a vehicle
to travel to a star?” he once said.
The
rest of the most popular paintings in the world are “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo Da
Vinci, “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt and “The scream” by Edvard Munch.
+++
It
seems that Silvio Berlusconi does not like Finnish Cuisine, as in 2005 he joked
that Finns ate “marinated reindeer”.
As
expected, the Finns didn’t hesitate to give an answer to mock Berlusconi.
In
2008, Finland won an international pizza contest, beating Italy. The name of
the winning pizza was “Pizza Berlusconi” and it was made of smoked reindeer!
+++
There
have been several literary descriptions from The Talmud to
Tolstoy of men breast-feeding. But can it be true?
Well,
it can be true, but under certain circumstances. Quite recently, in 2002,
“Agence France-Presse” reported that a 38-year-old man in Sri
Lanka, nursed his two daughters through their infancy after his wife died
during the birth of her second child.
Dana
Raphael, medical anthropologist, claimed in her 1978 book “The Tender Gift:
Breastfeeding”, that men could induce lactation simply by stimulating
their nipples.
In
any case, although it may sound weird, due to several factors such as nipples
stimulation, starvation or medical disruptions involving
prolactin, men’s body can sometimes produce milk!

All ‘data’ info is from the internet
sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned
that every site contains mistakes and sadly once the information is out there,
many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events
occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be
totally accurate.
