Random Tidbits

When the full moon coincides with a total lunar eclipse, it appears red. In this phenomenon known as the red moon, the only light seen is refracted through the earth's shadow. This light looks red for the same reason that the sunset looks red, due to ray light scattering of the more blue light.

The full moon has been thought to cause insanity and even more famously, lycanthropy. One of the most popular beliefs was that a man or woman could turn into a werewolf if he or she, on a certain Wednesday or Friday, slept outside on a summer night with the full moon shining directly on his or her face.

My Rambling Thoughts

Another great day in our little mountain town. Warm, sunny, great day for a nice walk.

Headed out a little early to do some necessary shopping. While out I visited with a former teacher from Tuba. Standing in the aisle, it was a nice visit. He is my age but looks so much older. He is also adopted and thanks to Ancestry and a detective his birth siblings hired he just found out he has birth brothers and sisters he never new about. They are planning a reunion this summer. He now knows he has 8 siblings who had been searching since 2001 for him. They even hired a private detective to find him. It worked. He said when the detective called him, he figured it was a scam but gave him his phone number. About 30 minutes later he got a call from one of the sister. Cool!

So nice to see the Queen and all the others during 45’s state visit. The Royal family sure knows how to put on a great show.

Note to self: NPR has a great series on Russia Youth. Do not mention politics while visiting either China or Russia. I want a great adventure, just don’t want any jail time. Haha.

PUZZLE OF THE DAY
Answer at the bottom of this page

David Justice and Derek Jeter were professional baseball players. In 1997 they had the following conversation:
David: Did you know that in both 1995 and 1996 I had better batting averages than you?
Derek: No way, my batting average over the last two years was definitely higher than yours!

It turned out that both of them were right. How is it possible?

Puzzle answer:

This is the so called Simpson’s paradox. The reason it occurred is that during 1996 both players had high averages and Derek Jeter had many more hits than David Justice. In 1996 both players had low averages and David Justice had many more hits than Derek Jeter. You can see their official statistics below.

Player
                                1995                       1996                        1995-1996
Derek Jeter           12/48 (.250)            183/582 (.314)      195/630 (.310)

David Justice         104/411 (.253)       45/140 (.321)        149/551 (.270)
