Random Tidbits
Kanawha
This
region later became the largest portion of the state of West Virginia, and
included some of the far northwestern counties of Virginia. It came about
during the crazy tensions of the Civil War. They voted to secede when Virginia
joined the Confederate States of America.
Texlahoma
Early
in the 20th century, rural areas had terrible roads and cars were popular,
making for dangerous driving. Since the politicians in the capitals were not
listening to their complaints, forty-six counties in Texas and twenty-three in
Oklahoma planned to secede and combine into a new state.
Transylvania
The
region included parts of Northern Tennessee and Southwestern Kentucky. It was
originally purchased by the Transylvania Company from the Cherokee Indians,
hence the unusual name.

My Rambling Thoughts
Our
journey moved on to Novosibirsk, in Siberia. Lots of clouds and lightning cut
our outdoor visit short, but still a great time. This is an amazing city with a
huge science center, train museum, and great food. Their opera house was a site
to behold. There were also many large historical statues. Not my vision of
Siberia, and I am pleasantly in awe of their cultural heritage. Outside of
town, more beautiful forests. When we got back on the train, after dinner, Vlad
shared some of his musical talent with our group. An evening to remember. The
next day is a full day of train riding, crossing 2 more time zones. Beauty
awaits.
As
we were traveling on the train, a few of us got together in the lounge/bar. I
have traveled with Molly several times and I knew she was a teacher, and had
gone to CU. During our conversation, we discovered we both graduated in Elem.
Ed. in 1971, that we both had volunteered with Clearing House to tutor
children, we probably had classes together and that she even lived one year in
the same apartment complex I did. The complex had about 12 apartments in an
L-shape. I was in the corner with my roommates, she was on the long end with
hers. Small world.
It’s
another warm, muggy day with no rain. Come on Monsoon. I am tired of waiting
for the cooling.
Yesterday
afternoon I stepped out to my vehicle to get something, and the Vietnamese lady
who does my pedis was walking by. Turns out she and her family moved in to the
neighborhood while I was traveling. Nice. Again, small world.

Puzzle answer:
The numbers on the right count the total
number of “holes” in the digits on the left. “1”, “2”, “3”, “4”, “5” and “7”
have 0 holes in them. “0”, “6” and “9” have 1 hole in them. “8” has 2 holes in
it. Therefore, the corresponding number is 3.
