Origins
Jacuzzi
The
Jacuzzi family emigrated from Italy to California in the early 1900s. They
worked in the agriculture sector, improving aviation devices and water pumps.
They invented the submersible pump, which was the first of its kind in the
world. When a family member developed arthritis, the brothers created a
portable hydrotherapy pump, which was the first type of Jacuzzi.
Nachos
Nachos
are such a popular snack that the word is not even spelled with a capital N,
even though it's the name, or rather the nickname rather, of a person. Ignacio
"Nacho" Anaya served what was later called nachos for the very first
time to American military wives at a restaurant in Mexico, close to Fort
Duncan. He fried tortilla chips and put shredded cheddar cheese and sliced
jalapenos on top. He warmed them up for a few minutes and voila!

My Rambling Thoughts
Having
a very nice Labor Day. Nice walk early this morning.
I
am reminded today of the reason for Labor Day. The Labor movement helped build
this great country. I made decent money in my HS/college days thanks to Labor
Unions. As President of the BIA Teacher’s Union our team was able to get staff
5 days of leave for personal business. Prior to that the leave had to be for ‘emergencies’
which were very limited. We all need to remember that employers want to make
the most money possible for themselves and/or the shareholders. That is fine,
but it needs to balance with the needs of the employees. Without labor unions,
the balance is seldom there. Just look at non-union Walmart or Amazon. They
make huge profits, they pay little or no taxes, and in the Walmart case, many
of their employees receive food stamps or other government aid. Many companies
offer benefits to only the full-time employees, so they cut hours for most of
their staff so they have the fewest number of full-time employees. Now many
businesses are cutting employees with automated checkout, automated help lines,
automated ordering, and the list goes on. Machines don’t need sick leave,
breaks from work, 8-hour work days, overtime pay, vacations, paychecks with
taxes paid by the employer, etc.
Labor
Day is the last hurrah of summer with lots of cookouts, family gatherings, etc.
All good times. Just take a few minutes to understand why we are celebrating
and do whatever you can to help the laborers who continue to build this great
country.
Florida
and others continue to prepare for Dorian’s arrival. The ‘we’ll just stick it
out’ might work this time, but it also could cost lives. During our recent fire
scare I get the feeling that one does not want to evacuate, but I trust the
officials enough to know that when they say leave, I leave.
Today’s Puzzle
Answer at the bottom of this page
What
word in the English language does the following:
the
first two letters signify a male, the first three letters signify a female, the
first four letters signify a great, while the entire world signifies a great woman.
What is the word?
This is hard because it gets you
thinking about gender and the ways they’re different. You have to think of one
word that holds the others. It’s easy when you think about it!
