Random Tidbits

This month's name came from the Latin octo, "eight," because this was the eighth month of the early Roman calendar. When the Romans converted to a 12-month calendar, the name October stuck, even though it's now the 10th month!

The first full Moon of fall - in this case, the Harvest Moon - appeared on Thursday, October 1. Later in the month, on Saturday, October 31 (Halloween), the second full Moon appears. This is the Hunter's Moon, which will be special for two reasons: it's a rare Halloween full Moon and a Blue Moon!

Also keep an eye out for the Draconid meteor shower in the late evening of October 9, and the Orionid meteor shower in the predawn hours of October 21-22.

The October birthstone is the opal, which symbolizes faithfulness and confidence.

Gem-quality opals are known for their play of color, caused by the diffraction of light. They are available in several types, including black, fire, and white opals. Common opals do not shimmer.

October's birth flowers are the cosmos and the calendula or marigold.

A little humor

Did you hear about the dentist who planted a garden?

A month later he was picking his teeth.

What do dentists and the TSA have in common?

Cavity checks.

True Things

Despite physical length, there are more bones in the neck of a sloth than a giraffe. There are seven vertebrae in the neck of giraffes, and in most mammals, but there are ten in a sloth.

My Rambling Thoughts

That high-pressure system has taken hold and will not leave. Another great day outside. The forest I walk in is all pine trees. I need to head up the mountain to see the aspen. I see a drive in the very near future. The colors are great from here, but I know much better when closer.

Living in Flagstaff I don’t have access to the greatest doctors in the Western Hemisphere, I don’t even have access to Covid testing with fast results. There is no helipad at my residence, in case I need to get the hospital quickly. I don’t think I can pack up my computer, screen, and peripherals to a hospital room. I don’t have in-house staff to cook, clean, wash and iron for me. Because of all that, I will continue to wear a mask in public, remain cautious when outside my house, and recognize Covid for what it is…a potentially deadly disease that has killed over 210,000 fellow Americans since March. Sorry Mr. President, but you just don’t get it.

The administration has spoken of ‘herd immunity’ for Covid. That means that the majority of Americans get it, many recover, many die, and the virus is under control. The President’s mask removal ceremony before entering the People’s House shows that he wants herd immunity…no matter how many fellow Americans die. I’ll pass on that plan.

The BIE (BIA) has a school at Havasupai, at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Families sued the BIE for lack of necessary Special Education services at the school. The families just won, which will have many ripple effects throughout the entire BIE education system. A step in the right direction.

The VP debate is tomorrow. I want to watch it. Pence should be in quarantine, but he believes, wrongly, that he is invincible. I think this is more of the ‘herd immunity’ concept. He hopes when he gets it that he will recover quickly.
