Despite its name, German
Chocolate Cake is actually American. The cake got its name from its creator Sam
German. It was originally called 'Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate' but the
name was shortened as the years passed.
True Things
-- A 35-year-old man from
Emmaus, Pennsylvania, was presumably having a good time on June 20, sitting in
his Dodge Ram truck and lighting fireworks, then throwing them out the window
... until he was critically injured by one that didn't make it outside the cab.
The exploding firework also did significant damage to the interior of the
truck, lehighvalleylive.com reported, but didn't cause a fire, Emmaus Police
Chief Troy Schantz said. [lehighvalleylive.com, 6/21/2021]

One Hit Wonder
Was
first used in the Winnipeg Free Press, in July 1977, in an article about Abba:
It stated “Instead of becoming what everyone expected- after winning the
Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo – a one-hit-wonder, they soon had a
string of hits behind them.” I’m surprised I could not find an earlier mention
of the term. If it was ever used earlier, it was probably about an
under-achieving baseball player.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
Our heat wave is finally waning. And there is a nice breeze to
boot.
I headed out for a much needed pedicure…had to wander the mall
about an hour before she could do it. All good. And I purchased a new phone
case. It lighter than the one I had so I’m a happy camper.
I could not believe the story about Syria under al-Asaad on 60
minutes last night. His torture and chemical gas continue. It is going to continue.
The UN tried to stop it, but Russia and China vetoed it. So disgusted.
I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to South Africa and
Cuba with our travel group, Focus Travel…along with HLO Tours to South Africa
and Tumlare to Cuba. Both the countries are now in turmoil. South Africa has
jailed former President Zuma for contempt of court. He has been charged with corruption.
Now there are lots of demonstrations. In Cuba, the demonstrations have started
up due to the lack of freedom. The former President had placed severe sanctions
on Cuba, and they are hurting the Cuban People more than the government. The UN
passed a resolution that the sanctions are inhumane. The US abstained in the
vote. They are in great need of a vaccine. Their medical community there has
developed a few and are trying to get them approved, but the people aren’t
getting any vaccine. I am so fortunate to see these two beautiful countries and
their fantastic people before the trouble began.
