My
Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
A
nice rain shower this morning with more on the way. It was a nice female rain
to help our forest.
One
of our discussion group members was hacked on his computer. They cleaned out their
bank account and messed up lots of their files. The money was FDIC insured but
the file corruption is going to take forever to fix. I also learned that
Flagstaff now has a ‘cyber-crime unit.’ They are working on his case and says
it looks like a ‘non-USA’ attack. His
wife has lots of health issues and her computer was very important to her wellbeing.
Now she is afraid to use it. So very sad.
We
had a very good discussion regarding the Triangle (El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras) last night. There are three main reasons for migration out of these
countries: economic, family reunion, and drugs/violence. The big surprise for
me is the family reunion group. Many came to this country for work and found a
way to stay. Now they want their family to join them. Makes sense to me. It is
unfortunate that the media and the government doesn’t emphasize this part. I’m
sure there are lots of newsworthy stories of these reunifications. It is also important
to remember that the reason drugs are such a draw is that Americans buy them on
the black market. If the drug selling was not as popular, it would slow down or
stop. ‘Just say NO’, DARE, and other programs have not stopped the desire by certain
people to want…and eventually need…the euphoria attached to the drugs. If our
goal is to stop drug trafficking and its associated violence, there should be deep
dives as to why people want the drugs in the first place, and how to prevent addiction.
We have learned that stiffer laws and long prison sentences simply don’t work.
I
really enjoyed the women’s individual diving. Lots of bumps during the finals,
but an American was on the podium for the first time since 2000 and the Chinese
kept their 1-2 winning streak alive. WOW!
