Thoughts
Clouds may bring
some monsoon rain later today. Hoping!
Due to the
drought conditions, Flagstaff has not had fireworks for over a decade. There is
still a real parade downtown. I didn’t go this year, but pictures in the paper
and on the internet machine showed a typical small-town parade…flags, candy, horses,
Red, White, and Blue, and some decent floats…and of course politicians.
Last night I
watched The Capitol 4th on PBS. It was well done as always. A
lady did a spectacular rendition of Stars and Stripes Forever on the
piano.

Trivia
Largely in
response to the Cold War, twelve western nations created the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization (NATO). If the Soviet Union attacked one country, the
others would defend them.
The peak of
the Cold War was the Cuban Missile Crisis, the closest the world has ever come
to self-destruction.
The Cold War
led to some ingenious spy gadgets, such as the "Rectal Escape Kit." A
spy would hide the escape kit in his or her rectum, just in case they were
captured and imprisoned.
