My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
Another nice
summer day. For some reason, my body decided today was a good day for my angioedema
to flare up. I’m good but my upper lip is huge.
Jackson
Mississippi, the state capital, has no running water. Same in the suburbs. Citizens were boiling water before the recent
floods. This is not a new problem…the water supply has been tenuous for the
past 5 years. Poor leadership to blame.
The former
Russian leader, Gorbachev, died yesterday at 91. He took over after the fall of
the USSR. He was not a hero in Russia.
Border
Patrol found $11.8 million in cocaine at a Tex-Mex border crossing. The cocaine
was stuffed in packages of baby wipes.
A recent
news story tells of a small plastic accessory that can turn a Glock pistol into
a rapid firing machine gun. It can and is being easily made with 3D printers
around the US. YouTube even has videos to show how to make them.

One Hit Wonders
The original
recording of "Black Betty" goes back to 1939, courtesy of renowned
bluesman Huddie Ledbetter -- aka "Lead Belly." Manfred Mann had a
version of the song in the early 1970s, but it was this short-lived New York
City outfit that made it a hit while peaking at No. 18 on the Hot 100. Ram Jam's
guitar-heavy take of this blues track is pure rock, with some pretty decent
drum work to boot.
Historical Events
1661 – In the first official well-known
Yacht Race, England’s King Charles lost to his brother, James.
1752 – “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the
land unto all the inhabitants thereof” The Liberty Bell was officially placed
in the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia.
1799 – The Bank of Manhattan Company (now
Chase Manhattan) opened in New York City.
1859 – The Carrington Event, a large
solar flare (a coronal mass ejection – CME, solar superstorm) affected many of
the (relatively few) electronics and telegraph lines on Earth.
1939 – Adolf Hitler signed an order to
begin the systematic euthanasia of mentally ill and disabled people.
1948 – The United Nation’s World Health
Organization was founded.
1952 – The Old Man and the Sea, the
Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Ernest Hemingway, was first published.
1969 – Muammar el-Qaddafi overthrew King
Idris, and founded the Libyan Arab Republic.
1972 – Bobby Fischer defeated Boris
Spassky of the USSR. He was the first American to compete in the tournament.
1972 – Mark Spitz won his 4th and 5th
Olympic Medals (he won 7 in total in the ’72 Olympics)
1979 – An LA Court ordered Clayton Moore
to stop wearing Lone Ranger mask. The copyright owners did not want any
association with him, although he used his fame as the Television face as the
Lone Ranger as a positive example of what the Ranger (and Tonto) represented.
He began wearing wrap-around shades instead
1983 – Korean Airlines flight 007 was
shot down over the Soviet Union with 269 onboard.
1985 – The Titanic was discovered about
350 miles southeast on Newfoundland, Canada
1999 – The German government moved from

2004 – The Beslan school siege began with
armed terrorists taking schoolchildren and school staff hostage in North
Ossetia, Russia. Three days later more than 385 people, including many of the
children, were killed.
