My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
Woke up to a
day of drizzle. Quite a surprise for our high desert mountain town. A nice surprise
for sure. Getting ready for autumn.
NY Attorney
General filed fraud lawsuit against Trump and most of his children. I’m patiently
waiting to see how this turns out.
Hurricane
Fiona is moving north and bring lots of rain to many islands. It probably won’t
hit the US directly, but some Canadian provinces will be in for a real mess.
Two American

The Anthropocene Epoch
Some
scientists consider the Earth to have entered a new geological epoch, the
Anthropocene; an age where human activity causes more changes to the Earth's
ecosystems than natural forces.
So how are
humans permanently changing the planet?
China's
ridiculously fast industrialization and population growth required massive
amounts of water. As a result, 28,000 of the country's 50,000 rivers have dried
up over the last 30 years.
There is a
bubble of debris in Earth's orbit. The U.S. Space Surveillance Network and
other organizations track roughly 750,000 pieces of "space junk" as
they orbit the Earth, some moving as fast as 17,000 miles-per-hour.
Myth Buster
Spanish flu came from Spain
Spain was simply the first country to
speak publicly about this disease, thus inspiring the name. In fact, this flu
seems to have first appeared in Kansas, around 1918, where it may have spread
through a camp housing thousands of young soldiers preparing to fight in
Europe. The rapid-spreading virus then killed 50 to 100 million people
worldwide, including young adults aged 25 to 29.
Historical Events
1776 – Nathan Hale was hanged by the
British as a spy for the colonies during the Revolutionary War. In fairness to
the British, this war hero was spying on them.
1789 – The U.S. Post Office was
established by congress.
1903 – The patent for the Ice Cream Cone
Mold (#746971) was granted to Italo Marchiony.
1911 – Pitcher Cy Young beat Pittsburgh
1-0 for his final career victory – number 511.
1920 – A Chicago Grand Jury convened to
investigate charges that 8 White Sox players conspired to fix the 1919 World
Series. They did.

on NBC.
1980 – Iraq invaded Iran, beginning the
8-year Iran-Iraq War.
2011 – CERN scientists announced their
discovery of neutrinos breaking the speed of light. There were reasonably sure
that the experiment would not cause a black hole that would suck up the entire
planet. So far, so good.

about noise pollution.”– Andrea Bocelli
