Today’s Thoughts

A nice day and the wind hasn’t picked up YET.

This morning’s very blue sky was a great backdrop to my morning walk around the neighborhood.

Our great country needs to do some real soul-searching about our responsibility on this planet. There was yet more mass shootings in the last 24 hours. The first was in Allen, Texas at an outlet mall where ordinary families were shopping. Then this morning, in Brownsville, Texas a driver plowed into a group of migrants near a shelter while they were waiting at a bus stop. At the mall there were 8 dead and at the bus stop there were 7 dead. While the blame for these two violent incidents, Texas holds some responsibility. As everyone knows, mass shootings can happen in any place in the US. There are far too many people in our country who do not see the value of every human life. Some, if not most, of the shooters are considered to be having a mental breakdown. Do our citizens protest for more mental health care in our country? Do our citizens demand that our political leaders find a solution? Until the general population demands change, the nearly daily headlines will cover more mass killings but not provide any remedy.

Enjoy

Animal Trivia

Hippos can open their mouths 180 degrees.

If you have never had nightmares about a hippo chasing you through the African savanna, get ready to have those tonight! The Hippo can open its massive mouth at a 180-degree angle, which is half the circumference of a circle. On top of being able to open its mouth to such a wide degree, the hippo also has canine teeth that are the length of 2 rulers and the jaw strength to bite a human in half. Oh yeah, and you cannot outrun them, as they can move at speeds of over 30km/h on land.

Origins of State Names

Massachusetts

The Bay State takes its official name from the Massachusett tribe of Native Americans who lived south of present-day Boston; that Algonquian term roughly translates to “at the Great Hill.” How appropriate given the pivotal American Revolution battle that took place in Massachusetts at Bunker Hill. The name Massachusetts first appeared on record in explorer John Smith’s 1616 book, A Description of New England, and in that text, he described the place as though its name had already been assigned by the Native inhabitants.
