Nice
monsoon gentle rain last night, woke up to lots of clouds.
I
am used to monsoon rains. Today I went grocery shopping. When I pulled out of
my place, it was cloudy with lots of thunder and lightning. About ½ mile on the
road, there was a huge downpour for about a mile. Then suddenly the pavement
was dry. About another mile and another downpour where even the highest speed
wipers couldn’t make it easy to see. Another ½ mile, dry pavement. Don’t remember
such changes on a single highway.
Keep
your eye on Hawaii. They are having horrific wildfires. The flames are being
fueled by a hurricane 400 miles away. Lots of dwellings and stores are being
destroyed.

The
Emancipation Proclamation didn't free all enslaved people.
The Emancipation Proclamation wasn't written by Abraham Lincoln with the intention
of abolishing slavery. The proclamation freed enslaved people in designated
areas in the South, and it was actually written as part of Lincoln's military
strategy, according to History.com.
It
freed slaves in the South, but it exempted Confederate states already under
Union control and border states like Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and
Missouri. The Union and Confederacy had been at war for two years when Lincoln
issued the proclamation, so it was meant to bolster support for the Union's
cause.
Slavery
wasn't completely abolished until the 13th Amendment, which banned slavery, was
added to the U.S. Constitution. Raquel White writes that "a clause in the
amendment, however, says that it is illegal to enslave anyone unless they are a
criminal." That amendment has allowed mass incarceration, where inmates
work without pay often in inhumane conditions, to persist in the modern-day
U.S

The Martians have landed!
On Sunday, October 30, 1938,
an episode of 'The Mercury Theatre on the Air' was performed and broadcast on
the radio. The program, directed and narrated by actor Orson Welles, was an
adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel 'The War of the Worlds' and was presented as a
series of live news bulletins. The increasingly alarming news updates were so
realistic that widespread panic ensued, as listeners really believed the Earth
was under attack from Martians.

British poet and politician Lord Byron kept a pet bear in his
dormitory while studying at Cambridge. Known for being an avid animal lover,
when he found out he couldn’t bring his dog, he decided to bring a tame bear to
live with him on campus instead. He was even known to take it on walks with a
leash!
For over 30 years, Canada and Denmark have been playfully
fighting for control of a tiny island near Greenland called Hans Island. Once
in a while, when officials from each country visit, they leave a bottle of
