Today’s Thoughts
Monsoon
continues. Nice one during the night. Woke up to wet sidewalks and roads.
Shocker:
The movie Blind Side about a black athlete making the NFL and a white
couple who raised him is in the headlines. While the movie says the white couple
adopted him, the truth is that they put him in a conservatorship. This
will all be settled in court, but if the player is correct, this feel good
movie is now a very sad one.
The
fourth indictment of Trump now has a count of 91 criminal charges, and some are
felonies. I know it’s “innocent until proven guilty” but I find that to be a
bit much.
Enjoy
Statue of Liberty …
7. The
statue was originally supposed to be a lighthouse.
When Ulysses
Grant authorized the use of Bedloe Island (now Liberty Island) for the
statue, he specified that the Statue of Liberty would be a lighthouse. That would
give the Lady a purpose, and therefore, would merit government funding.
However, the engineers were never able to successfully light it enough to serve
that purpose—a cause of extreme frustration for Bartholdi. Over time, it would
be clear that the site of Bedloe’s Island was too far inland for it to be a
good position for a lighthouse, anyway.
Hoax proved wrong…
Adolf Hitler and Nazi
propaganda
Adolf Hitler and his minister
of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, launched a nationwide campaign to convince
Germans that the Jewish people were the enemy of all classes. It was
devastatingly effective. Hitler used terror, coercion, and mass manipulation to
ferment anti-Semitism across the country, which eventually became a national
policy known as the "final solution."
Random Trivia…
Cars weren’t invented in the United States! The first car was
actually created in the 19th century when European engineers Karl Benz and
Emile Levassor were working on automobile inventions. Benz patented the first
automobile in 1886.
****
Abraham Lincoln was also a licensed bartender. In 1833, the 16th
president opened a bar called Berry and Lincoln with his friend William F.
Berry in New Salem, Illinois. The shop was eventually closed when Berry, a
raging alcoholic, consumed most of the shop's supply.
