Thoughts
for the day
A nice fall day. Much cooler than
Mexico, but nice here too.
While in Mexico we went to some great
restaurants. In Merida we ate had late lunches and late dinners at most places.
One place had Yucatan food which was very good. In San Miguel, one of Richard
and Laura’s friends owned a restaurant were he was the chef. The birthday
dinner was fantastic. The chef provided a variety of very decadent desserts, ready
for sampling.
Our day trips from the hacienda
included a boat ride into the rain forest that was spectacular. We went to the night
before the Bullfight Dance. It started at midnight, was fun watching everyone
all traditionally dressed doing their dances. The pre-teens had some great
couple dances. There were also food booths and a kids carnival. We stayed about
an hour and a half and went home but the music played loudly until 4am. It made
it difficult to sleep but we were the visitors so what can you do?
After a two-hour flight to San Miguel,
we went to the house R&L rent in San Miguel, a nice 3-bedroom, 2 story home
and converted theater. Off to their small hotel and shops including Laura’s
shop. Then we wandered around San Miguel after a great breakfast at another friend’s
place.
Spending time with Lenny and Eleanor was
fantastic. They are kind and wonderful new ‘relatives’ for me. I am so glad I
took this adventure. By the end of the week, Lenny and I were also brothers. So
nice!

Myth #1: Bears and Hibernation
Hibernation, commonly
misunderstood as a tactic for avoiding freezing cold, is a captivating natural
spectacle that animals embrace to navigate the challenging waters of food
scarcity. The unavailability of sustenance during this season drives certain
creatures into their prolonged state of dormancy.
This remarkable biological siesta enables them to dramatically downshift their metabolic gears, depending on stored fat reserves to endure the barren months ahead. It might come as a surprise, but chilly temperatures do indeed induce a sense of drowsiness in these animals. However, for them, it’s not about seeking comfort; it’s a matter of life and death.
Myth #2: The Color of Polar Bears
At first glance, polar bears appear to be draped in a pristine snowy mantle—an Arctic optical illusion at its finest! However, the incredible truth lies beneath the surface: their coat is neither white nor opaque but transparent and hollow. The hollow fibers capture and reflect light, perfectly mimicking the frigid ice-covered terrain.

The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 Was
a Successful Indigenous Uprising©Image Credit: Loren Mozley for TRAP (USgov),

In 1680, the Pueblo people of
present-day New Mexico launched a successful rebellion against Spanish colonial
rule. The Pueblo Revolt, also known as Popé’s Rebellion, was led by a spiritual
leader named Popé who united the various Pueblo tribes against the Spanish.
The uprising began on August
10, 1680, with coordinated attacks on Spanish settlements and missions. The
Pueblo forces, armed with bows and arrows and captured Spanish weapons, drove
the colonizers out of the region. For the next 12 years, the Pueblo people
governed themselves, free from Spanish control.
Although the Spanish
eventually reconquered the area, the Pueblo Revolt remains a powerful example
of indigenous resistance and self-determination.
