Thoughts for the day
Another nice summer day.
I had lunch with Andy and Faith. They are heading back to Phx on
Saturday. Andy got some steroid shots for his back issues. He’s doing well now.
The North Rim Dragon fire had now burned 16,490 acres. There are 998 personell
on the fire. 113 structures have been destroyed.
Flag has a new car wash, Blue Ocean. I got a pass for $20/month. Their
machines do a great job. Much better job than Clean Freak, the car wash I had
been using.
As a kid I got Highlights for Children from my grandma. I really
enjoyed the ‘Find the Difference’ puzzles. It is two similar pictures with
slight differences. Similar puzzles keep showing up on my Facebook page. I
still enjoy them, but FB doesn’t show the answers, and the comments only help
sometimes. They would be great if they showed the answer.
History Facts Americans Commonly Get
Wrong
The Emancipation Proclamation
Didn’t End Slavery Everywhere
Many people believe Abraham
Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed all enslaved people in America. The
truth is more complicated.
Issued on January 1, 1863, the proclamation only applied to states in
rebellion—not to the border states or areas already under Union control.
Slavery continued in places like Kentucky, Delaware, and parts of Louisiana
until the 13th Amendment was ratified in December 1865.
Literary Legends…
Zora Neale Hurston
Zora Neale Hurston’s
masterpiece, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is acclaimed for
its vivid use of dialect and its profound exploration of Black
womanhood in the rural South. Hurston’s storytelling blends folklore,
anthropology, and cultural insight, bringing to life the complexities of her
characters’ experiences. Her legacy, both as a writer and anthropologist, is
celebrated at the Zora
Neale Hurston Festival, which highlights her enduring impact on American
literature and cultural studies.
