Thoughts for the day

Another warm summer day.

I had lunch with Mary and Mike. Good food, good conversation. They are heading back to Chandler on Monday. They are enjoying our ’heat’ as it is much better than the 113° down there.

Myths from Medieval Times

There Was (Some) Medical Knowledge

No one in modern times with any sense would want to see a medieval doctor over a modern-day equivalent — but even though medieval medicine left a lot to be desired, doctors weren't totally clueless, either.

The concept of barber-surgeons working without anesthetic sounds horrifying, but these early doctors developed surprisingly advanced techniques for dealing with wounds and fractures. Other doctors utilized practical remedies using various herbs and natural substances.

Literary Legends…

Saul Bellow

Saul Bellow’s celebrated novels, including Herzog and The Adventures of Augie March, explore the intellectual and spiritual quests of modern life. His vibrant characters and philosophical narratives have made a lasting impact on American fiction. Bellow’s literary achievements, marked by wit and existential depth, earned him the Nobel Prize. His enduring significance to modern literature is acknowledged by the Nobel Prize institution.
