Trijicon is a company I had never heard of until yesterday. Now it is big news. They are the Michigan company that has a huge contract with the Dept. of Defense to provide guns, binoculars, and other military paraphernalia to our troops fighting around the world. It turns out that back in 2003 and continuing now, the serial numbers on their products contain a reference to a variety of bible quotations. It has taken seven years to figure this out, but now everyone knows and the company ain’t apologizing. In fact they claim that their founder, who died several years ago, started the practice and they are just carrying on his legacy. One gun sight has a serial number: AC00CQGN32JN8:12. JN8:12 refers to John 8:12, that reads, "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." All references appear to be from the New Testament.
Many in the military are rightly not amused. However, they are not sure there is anything illegal about this. Some Soldier Rights groups are outraged. Illegal or not, what kind of message is, and has been, this sending to our allies and our enemies. Many have said that the wars we are involved in are against Islam. This certainly gives the enemy some propaganda. Hello, not all our soldiers are Christians, and not all those who are Christian see this as a Holy War. Does this company think that by putting religious messages on their weapons somehow makes the war justified? Do they think that if the enemy gets some of these weapons that they will read the serial number and convert? Do they believe that the weapon will only function correctly when in the hands of a Christian? Do they think that the weapon will operate correctly in the hands of an American soldier who is not Christian? This whole thing is outrageous.

Our weatherman was a little off. The first storm brought only about 4” of snow where I live. It was sunny almost all day. The second storm is coming in now. It dropped to 28° last night and only warmed up to 38° today. There were some hefty winds (30mph) at various times today. Just waitin’ to see what tomorrow will bring.

►Free Ramblings                             .
I woke up about 3am this morning, to find that my temporary dental cap had come off. A very strange feeling. I guess I will know what my mouth was doing, so early in the morning, while I was sleeping. A quick trip to the dentist, and two tries to get it reattached and I was back to waiting for the new cap. I so hate temporary caps…I have had three and two have come off during the wait for the real cap. I must be jinxed.
After the dentist, I did make a stop and get gas, just in case it gets really bad here.
The wind blew hard all night, and woke me up, sort of, several times. The wind died down at sunrise. It has been snowing all day. Not too much is sticking…yet. The sun has gone down, the temp has dropped, and I’m sure I’ll wake up in the morning to a blanket of snow. This is the first of three storms coming through and is expected to drop about 10”. I keep up my mantra: The forest needs the snow. We only went down to 26° last night, and got up to 33° today. One good thing about this first storm, it is not a winter blast of Arctic air…it’s coming to us from California—another state that needs the moisture.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Officials at a Denmark airport said a 3-year-old boy rode the entirety of the baggage belt system, including an X-ray machine. Copenhagen Airport workers said the young boy hoisted himself onto an unattended baggage belt while he and his mother were checking in for an early Thursday flight, The Copenhagen Post reported Monday. The X-ray directed the boy to an area for bags that needed to be handled manually because an identification tag was not detected. An airport worker heard the boy calling out from the area and he was rescued and reunited with his mother. Officials said the boy seemed shaken but nharmed. He was believed to have boarded the plane with his mother as planned.

The horrors of Haiti continue to fill the news. For those few who do not want to help Haiti, it is not that much different than Yemen. While the major difference is that Haiti is mostly Roman Catholic, the youth of Haiti—like the youth of Yemen--are looking for an answer. Not just a short term answer to getting water, food, and shelter, but they are looking for a long term answer for stopping the poverty. Many NGO’s have been working there for years to prepare the youth for a better life. The Cubans, like the Haitians, had a mistrust of their government some fifty years ago and their rebel leader led them down a very different path than they expected.
Most of us are somewhat familiar with Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. As we celebrate his life, here are some lesser known quotes:.

People in Flag seem to be getting ready for the big storms that are approaching. It is hard to believe we are getting ready to be snowed in for a week. Today we made it to 42° and while there was a 20mph breeze, it wasn’t that bad a day outside.

Not a good day for Arizona sports. The Cards left their game plan at the airport in Phx as huge crowds sent them off a few days ago, hoping for a repeat appearance in the Super Bowl. They looked very good, with a touchdown in New Orleans, on the FIRST play. Too bad football has four quarters. After watching most of that horrible game, I turned to the Suns. Another mistake. Suns lost big time. Maybe the Suns and the Cards just traded game plans. Oh well, Cards have next year—again. Suns are not out yet, but rapidly heading for it.
Our discussion group last night centered on Peacemaking. Some very interesting ideas were exchanged. On my trip to Scotland, I heard about NGO’s [Non-Government Organizations]. I guess all my work within the government kept me isolated from them. Since then I saw some great NGO’s in Egypt, South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia. After reading several articles and a good discussion I have a new appreciation for many of the NGO’s I had seen. While we all know that some NGO’s have the potential to be corrupt, the overwhelming majority of NGO’s are working well at the grass roots level to provide people with what they need. This is not the same thing as what a government tells them they want. Giving the people what they say they need is a great way to get support from locals. So much better than arriving with guns or politicians with their own agendas.
The weather service has made me a little nervous. First, on Friday, they said we would have ‘continuous snow starting Monday and not ending till Thursday. They also said only about 6” of snow would accumulate. Now, a short three days later, they are saying there are three storms headed our way--back to back. The first two will drop about 24” on parts of Flagstaff. The last one is still in question, but could drop another 24”. They are already telling travelers to find alternate routes all of next week. The only ‘alternate route’ means just skipping Flagstaff and for most travelers, it means somehow skipping Northern Arizona all together. Great for a tourist town. What the Hell? I think I’ll just sit back and wait and see. For those who travel to or from Flagstaff for work every day, here really aren’t any ‘alternate routes.’ For me to get to any store in Flagstaff, there is only one way to do it. If these storms really materialize, it ain’t gonna be pretty.
With all these football games, it sure felt like Sunday. Then when my favorite Sunday night shows weren’t on, I looked at my watch and surprise…it was Saturday. Retirement brain farts don’t happen often, but when they do, they can really mess up plans.

Our lunch group got off on child rearing today. I really don’t have much to say, not having raised any kids. However, a sad story was told. One of the teachers I knew didn’t trust the teenage kids. They would steal and sell family things. The parents were going on a trip. They took all their expensive, sellable stuff and locked it in the bedroom. They headed out. The next day one of the kids called and said they had locked the cat in the bedroom and it was hungry and making a lot of noise. The door had to be broken to let the cat out. When they returned, much of their sellable stuff was indeed sold. OMG. The parents didn’t travel much after that.
It is so sad to listen to the news from Haiti. Many of the planes that have doctors and much needed water can’t land and have to circle for hours and some have to go to another country to refuel and try again. Life in this century is sure difficult if there is no infrastructure.
We are approaching a 3-day weekend. Arizona was slow on the uptake to honor Mr. King, but we do now. Probably will be seeing a lot of Tuba people the next few days.
The expected storm never materialized in my area, however, some areas of Flag and much of Williams did get some snow. Our next expected storm is next week with ‘continuous snow showers for several days'—but only dropping about 6” of the white stuff. Last night only dropped to 24° and we made it to 42° today. The 25mph winds with 40mph gusts didn’t make it a very nice day around here.

My dental visit was a dental success—in and out in less than a hour, and my wallet is thinner.
The eyes of the world are on Haiti. The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere is in very dire straits. America is responding. The American government, American citizens, American churches, American Medical Personnel are all working to bring relief. Other nations are also responding. The pictures and reports are devastating. Haiti doesn’t have a great track record for good government, and now their total infrastructure is gone. No fresh water, no first response teams, no electricity, little food, no hospitals, no government offices, few buildings safe to enter. So very sad.
Sadly, some conservative jackasses added their petty comments. Ol’ Rush is reported as saying he wonders why Obama reacted so quickly, when it took him so long with the Detroit guy. Then he added some racial thing about dark-skinned and light-skinned. Idiot! Then Pat Robertson said that Haiti sold itself to the Devil a long time ago and is now paying the price. Idiot.
Our storm hasn’t materialized yet. It was cloudy most of the day, but alas no moisture. It dropped to 20° last night, but very strangely, when I left for the dentist at 8:00 it was 42°. I figured my outdoor thermometer was messed up, but when I walked outside, it was not cold at all. Very odd. Here’s hoping the snow arrives tonight, as predicted again.
