My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Starting another monsoon day. Clouds are coming in and I’m hoping for more female rain today.

I’m still enjoying the Olympics. I don’t follow most of the Olympic sports, but sure enjoy watching these top athletes doing their sport. This morning I was watching Kayak singles and doubles. Impressive to see their agility in the kayak. I learned about the long cool down after a race. I’m also impressed by the athlete’s endurance in the high humidity-high heat of Tokyo’s outdoor events. True Olympic spirit with the high jumpers who tied and decided to share the gold rather than have a jump off.

The Tuba Boarding opening saga continues: Today is the first day of school for ½ the student body. This morning they announced that lunches would be delivered by bus to those at home at 9a. That means that 3 days a week students get a sack lunch, and two days a week they go to the cafeteria for lunch. TGIR

I’m seeing lots of videos of ‘Bear Sun’ as he walks across Navajoland. He is a man in a life-size costume walking across the US to emphasize a variety of human causes. Here is his story.

The media is trying to raise the vaccination rates with stories about people who didn’t get vaccinated. They also show parents who will not vaccinate their eligible children. It is obvious these parents care about their children, but don’t want to understand the science. Sad.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

A nice rain shower this morning with more on the way. It was a nice female rain to help our forest.

One of our discussion group members was hacked on his computer. They cleaned out their bank account and messed up lots of their files. The money was FDIC insured but the file corruption is going to take forever to fix. I also learned that Flagstaff now has a ‘cyber-crime unit.’ They are working on his case and says it looks like a ‘non-USA’ attack.  His wife has lots of health issues and her computer was very important to her wellbeing. Now she is afraid to use it. So very sad.

We had a very good discussion regarding the Triangle (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras) last night. There are three main reasons for migration out of these countries: economic, family reunion, and drugs/violence. The big surprise for me is the family reunion group. Many came to this country for work and found a way to stay. Now they want their family to join them. Makes sense to me. It is unfortunate that the media and the government doesn’t emphasize this part. I’m sure there are lots of newsworthy stories of these reunifications. It is also important to remember that the reason drugs are such a draw is that Americans buy them on the black market. If the drug selling was not as popular, it would slow down or stop. ‘Just say NO’, DARE, and other programs have not stopped the desire by certain people to want…and eventually need…the euphoria attached to the drugs. If our goal is to stop drug trafficking and its associated violence, there should be deep dives as to why people want the drugs in the first place, and how to prevent addiction. We have learned that stiffer laws and long prison sentences simply don’t work.

I really enjoyed the women’s individual diving. Lots of bumps during the finals, but an American was on the podium for the first time since 2000 and the Chinese kept their 1-2 winning streak alive. WOW!

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

August is continuing our wet monsoon. Already had one storm and another is not far behind. No complaints.

Sorry to read of the passing of former CO governor Dick Lamm who passed at 85.

Looks like wearing masks will be the norm around here. I wish more would just get vaccinated.

Our discussion group is finally meeting tonight. We have had only one outdoor meeting in over a year. It will be good to get together. Tonight’s topic is US/Northern Triangle issues over immigration. The articles were over a year old, so some things have changed leaving me to do some additional research. It is still a hot issue. I’m hoping I will hear some viable solutions.

When I worked on my uncle’s ranch in the late 60’s every summer there was talk of cloud seeding to bring rain to the hay crops, wheat crops, and cattle. Neighbors would get together at the town bar and try to decide if the cost was worth the benefit. Most years the rain would come, and the discussion would end.

Dubai has brought cloud seeding to the 21st century. The desert is very dry and the 125° daily heat doesn’t help. They are now using drones to shoot laser-beams into the clouds to force rain out of the clouds. It seems to be helping.
