My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Heat wave continues at 7000’.

When my living room reached 95° with the fan on high, I broke down and set up the portable swamp cooler…much better.

Local Forest Service has doused 10+ fires in the 72 hours before noon Friday. All were thankfully smaller than 1 acre.

Trump and Pence held separate rallies for the two conservative Republican candidates for Governor here in AZ yesterday. Both had decent turnouts.

Thank you to Turkey for brokering a deal between Russia and Ukraine to allow tons of grain to be released to prevent a hunger mess around the world. It may not hold as Russia is bombing near Odessa, the open port for the grain.

Uvalde school board has cancelled today’s meeting regarding its chief of police. The chief’s team said they needed more time to prepare.

Here is a new one to watch out for: Ticketmaster is doing ‘dynamic pricing’ for its most popular concerts. A customer signs in and sees that lower-level seats are $75 for the concert. When they checkout they learn that the price has risen if there is demand for those seats. The check out price for one guy was $3000 for two seats that were $100 each when he signed in. Crazy!

Squaring a circle was finally proved to be an impossible problem in 1882 when German mathematician Ferdinand von Lindemann proved that pi is a transcendental number. That is; it is not the root of any polynomial with rational coefficients. Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, and without it the problem could not be done.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Heat wave continues. Very unusual for Flag to be over 90°.

I had a good lunch with Faith and Andy. They talked about their Alaska Cruise. Very nice trip with great memories. Now they are ready for another cruise to see more of Alaska.

Last night’s hearing was historic. Now we know.

My dad was born this day in 1914. He was a great dad and lived to 80 years old. He is still missed.

A local site, Frances Short Pond, is a man-made pond named after a Flagstaff Environmentalist. The recent fire caused debris to get into the pond and kill most the fish that had been stocked there. The city and country are cleaning it up and will restock when it is safe. So sad.

If you like heat, now is the time to travel to Europe. The Euro is currently worth a tad less than the dollar…a first for the Euro. When I traveled to Scotland, soon after my retirement the exchange rate was $1USD was @$2.40 pound.

You may have heard the saying, "you can't square a circle," meaning, "you can't do the impossible."

Squaring a circle used to be an unsolvable mathematical problem. This was one the ancient Greeks came up with and they never found a solution to it.

The problem is to create a square equal in area to a circle. It sounds simple enough, but the trick is you can only use the mathematical tools available to the ancients; that is a straightedge and compass.
