Monsoon continues. It is barely noon and already had two 10-minute rains.

I did the readings for the Iran at a Crossroads. I learned a lot. Since the revolution, the population has become much younger. Since the revolution, fewer are attending religious services. After the killing of a young woman for not wearing the head covering ‘correctly’, women have become more active in the change process. Most Iranians still dislike the US for its interference back in the 1960’s. Iran is certainly a place to watch.

Origins of State Names

Ohio

You can’t find any U.S. state names shorter than Ohio, but it was named after an even shorter Iroquoian word: O-Y-O, meaning “great river.” The Seneca Native Americans settled along what is now the Ohio River in the 1650s, and though the region was briefly named La Belle Riviere by French explorers in the late 1600s, the English restored its Native Ohio name when they took control in the mid-1700s.

May’s average precipitation is 3 days. Here we are way higher than the average. Every day seems to bring rain. My beautiful (still) new vehicle is covered with spots from the rain. I went to the local car wash and can get up to 2 washes a day for $20 a month. With the early monsoon, I may use it a lot. I should note that the dealership has stopped the free car washes for new owners and now is only for when the customer is having service. The new sign says it a liability issue.

I wonder how long the House and the President are going to keep the debt ceiling crisis before they fix it? Personally, I find it very boring and would change the channel if I could.

Origins of State Names

North Dakota

Much like the Carolinas, the Dakotas were once a singular, larger territory before being split into separate states in 1889.  The name Dakota was taken from that of the Native American Dakotas, a Sioux tribe who originally inhabited the region; the word means “friend,” though is also often translated as “allies.” Will the region be divided even further leading to an East and West Dakota someday? Probably not, but anything is possible

I had lunch with Mary & Mike today. He is getting ready for his wilderness trail training. Mary is busy with her quilts. Good food, good conversation.

The H1B visas are to bring highly skilled workers from other countries that cannot be filled because Americans don’t have the expertise. Great idea gone awry. Surprise, tech companies are abusing it. They can hire foreign workers at a cheaper pay and keep them at lower pay because their visa is attached to their job…leave the job, lose the visa. In several companies, Americans are being laid off and the company if filling the job with H1B workers. It has even been shown that the Americans are being told to train the H1B person taking the American’s job. Congress seems to have blinders on. So sad.

I’m doing the readings for our discussion group on Saturday…Iran is at a Crossroads.

Origins of State Names

North Carolina

Naming a state after yourself is quite the power move, but that’s exactly what happened in 1629. King Charles I of England decided to name a new province Carolina (although it also appeared as “Carolana” in the charter), which is derived from Carolus, the Latin form of his name. Ah, to be king. In 1663, King Charles II granted a new charter for the same territory to the Lords Proprietors, who in 1710, appointed a separate governor to the northern part of the region. In 1729, the Carolina colony was officially divided in two, making Charles the namesake for double the amount of states he initially intended.

• 1848 – Mexico ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ending the Mexican-American War and ceding California, Nevada, Utah and parts of four other modern-day US states to the United States for $15 million.
• 1962 – Marilyn Monroe sang her famous Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy at NYC’s Madison Square Garden.
