Thoughts for the day

Another nice summer day.

I had lunch with Andy and Faith. They are heading back to Phx on Saturday. Andy got some steroid shots for his back issues. He’s doing well now.

The North Rim Dragon fire had now burned 16,490 acres. There are 998 personell on the fire. 113 structures have been destroyed.

Flag has a new car wash, Blue Ocean. I got a pass for $20/month. Their machines do a great job. Much better job than Clean Freak, the car wash I had been using.

As a kid I got Highlights for Children from my grandma. I really enjoyed the ‘Find the Difference’ puzzles. It is two similar pictures with slight differences. Similar puzzles keep showing up on my Facebook page. I still enjoy them, but FB doesn’t show the answers, and the comments only help sometimes. They would be great if they showed the answer.

The Emancipation Proclamation Didn’t End Slavery Everywhere

Many people believe Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed all enslaved people in America. The truth is more complicated.
Issued on January 1, 1863, the proclamation only applied to states in rebellion—not to the border states or areas already under Union control. Slavery continued in places like Kentucky, Delaware, and parts of Louisiana until the 13th Amendment was ratified in December 1865.

Her legacy, both as a writer and anthropologist, is celebrated at the Zora Neale Hurston Festival, which highlights her enduring impact on American literature and cultural studies.

Thoughts for the day

I had my regular teeth cleaning this morning. All good.

I was already a teacher when Ozzy hit the airwaves with Black Sabbath. I was teaching 7th-8th grade English when my supervisor, a Mormon, wanted to expel a student for wearing a Black Sabbath T-shirt. The student only knew about the band but the supervisor claimed it was ‘devil worship’. It took 3 of the young teachers to convince her that it was a band. She dropped the expel idea and just told him not to wear the shirt again. May Ozzy RIP.

Our Vets should receive the best medical treatment available for any injury, physical or mental, received while serving in our Armed Forces. I have known several vets who suffer from PTSD. Living in rural AZ, the best care is hardly available. The Trump administration is cutting their care. So disgusting.

I am so tired of President Trump sitting with invited world leaders that have to sit through his press conferences as he rambles about his issues with all his perceived American wrongs, usually aimed at previous administrations. It makes our country look weak and petty.

Paul Revere Wasn’t Alone on His Midnight Ride

“Paul Revere’s Ride” is one of the most famous moments in American folklore. But the truth is, Revere wasn’t the only rider spreading the alarm that the British were coming.
William Dawes and Samuel Prescott rode with him, and many other lesser-known patriots also carried the message. In fact, Revere never even finished the ride—he was detained by British troops, while Prescott made it to Concord to warn the militia.

History Facts Americans Commonly Get Wrong

The Pilgrims Did Not Land on Plymouth Rock ©wikimedia

The story goes that the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in 1620, but historians have long debunked this tidy tale. There is no mention of Plymouth Rock in any original Pilgrim writings.
The first reference to the rock appeared more than a century later, in 1741, when Elder Thomas Faunce, then 94, identified it as the landing site. By then, it was mostly legend.
Archaeologists and historians now agree the Pilgrims landed somewhere along the Massachusetts coast, but the exact spot remains unknown. The rock itself has become a powerful symbol, yet it’s unlikely the Pilgrims ever set foot on it.
Despite the tourism and tradition, the story is mostly a case of myth-making. Americans love a good origin tale, even if it isn’t quite true.

Clarke’s Law of Revolutionary Ideas: Every revolutionary idea – in Science, Politics, Art or Whatever – evokes three stages of reaction. They may be summed up by the three phrases: > 1. “It is completely impossible – don’t waste my time.” 2. “It is possible, but it is not worth doing.” 3. “I said it was a good idea all along.”
