"Now sweetly lies old Ireland Emerald green beyond the foam."
May the blessings of each day
Be the blessings you need most.
Life is like a cup of tea,
it's all in how you make it!
We cannot share this sorrow
If we haven't grieved a while.
Nor can we feel another's joy
Until we've learned to smile.

Although it is part of the French military, it is the only unit of the military that does not swear allegiance to France, but to the Foreign Legion itself.

Some Americans disagreed with the United States' initial refusal to enter WWI and so they joined the French Foreign Legion or the British or Canadian army. A group of U.S. pilots formed the Lafayette Escadrille, which was part of the French air force and became one of the top fighting units on the Western Front.

My Rambling Thoughts

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all the Irish, and those who wish they were.

A friend stopped by Saturday evening and we ended up watching Netflix until 2a. Spent the day yesterday resting up.

Today our retirement group decided to stop meeting every week until this Corona Virus thing gets cleared up. We are all over 70 and have various old-er age issues that might compromise our immune system. Better safe than sorry, and we all still have phones.

I have decided to go to the e-edition of my local paper. I will certainly miss the paper edition, but they are part of a huge conglomerate that really doesn't help me. I made 4 phone calls on 4 different days to end the vacation hold on my paper. I never got a copy. This morning I called and told the guy I was getting very upset as each other person said they had canceled the hold. He then informed me that my subscription was past due and that's why they couldn't deliver the paper. I asked to speak to his supervisor, since I never got a bill. Five hours later I am still waiting for the call back. Then I went to the website for my paper, and it said my subscription was good until 4-9-2020. Last year I paid about $200 for the year, the guy said a new subscription would be $350 for a year. Enough is enough.

I am so grateful to the many healthcare workers who continue to show up to help the sick. I heard today on NPR that retired doctors and nurses have been called to see if they will return to work as the epidemic continues. Many others have simply contacted their previous employer to see if they are needed. Very cool.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated every year on March 17th. It is a national holiday in the Republic of Ireland as well as the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Laborador.
St. Patrick's Day was a religious holiday, dedicated the Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, until 1903 when it became public by the Bank Holiday Act fo 1903. The Irish Memeber of Parliment, James O'Mara, later introduced a law that all pubs be, wait for it, closed on March 17th. Surprisingly, this law stuck around until the 1970's, when people finally realized that St. Patrick's Day is all about drinking, drinking, drinking.

Saint Patrick
Saint Patrick was born around the end of the fourth century A.D. in Britain. Although his father was a Christian deacon, their family was not a very religous one. At 16, Saint Patrick was taken into slavery by a group of Irish thieves who took over his home village. During his time in captivity, he spent a lot of time alone and in this time turned to God, becoming more religious. After six years, Saint Patrick escaped and went to Gaul where he studied in a monestary for 12-15 years. After being ordinated as a priest, Saint Patrick was sent to Ireland to be a minister as well as conver the non-Christian Irish. His mission lasted for 30 years.

The Parade
The first St. Patrick's Day Parade was actually held in New York City in 1962. It consisted of Irish soldiers serving in the English military marching the streets of the city. "Each year, nearly three million people line the one-and-a-half mile parade route to watch the procession, which takes more than five hours. Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Savannah also celebrate the day with parades including between 10,000 to 20,000 participants." - The History Channel

Traditions
The traditional meal of Saint Patrick's Day is corned beef, boiled potatoes and mashed cabbage, as well is Guiness Beer.
The shamrock is a special part of the holiday; in ancient Ireland it symbolized the rebirth of spring. Since then, the shamrock has become a symbol of Irish nationalism and pride. It is also said that Saint Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to demonstrate the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The color green is associated with the holiday for a few, obvious reasons. The first is because of the shamrock, which the Irish hold close to their culture. Also, green is on the national Irish flag, where is represents all the green pastures of the country.

Pour the remaining 2 gallons from the 5 gallon into the empty 3-gallon jug. Now fill the 5 gallon from the faucet. You now have exactly 7 gallons.

Historically, the American film industry portrayed the Foreign Legion as having a reputation as a haven for cut-throats and fugitives from justice.

This image is largely out of date since the legion now conducts extensive background checks via Interpol.

My Rambling Thoughts

About a week before my planned trip I bought a 12 Mega roll pack of TP. Glad I did, as when I went shopping late yesterday, Sam's, Fry's, and WalMart had nothing but empty shelves where toilet paper should be. Something is off. Corona Virus is a lung infection and does not cause diarrhea. How many months are people planning on self-quarantine? When TP becomes available again, I expect to see much higher prices. Guess it will remain a mystery until TP is available again.

Talked to Ellie this morning and was happy to hear that everyone made it back to their homes safely. Also found out that many of us tried to apply by phone for our refund and, like me, never got a call back. Most of us registered on line. Some got a case number, others, like me, didn't get an email reply yet. It's the weekend and they are closed, so I'll check again on Monday. Many of us got phone calls from Oceania Cruises to offer us credit + for our next cruise. I was offered 125%, some from Focus said they were offered 150%. All I can say is thank you so much to all the Tumlare, Focus, and Oceania staffs for their long, hard work of keeping customers happy. It is appreciated more than words can express.

An Arab sheik is old and must will his fortune to one of his two sons. He makes a proposition. His two sons will ride their camels in a race, and whichever camel crosses the finish line LAST will win the fortune for its owner. During the race, the two brothers wander aimlessly for days, neither willing to cross the finish line. In desperation, they ask a wise man for advice. He tells them something; then the brothers leap onto the camels and charge toward the finish line. What did the wise man say?

Random Tidbits

The French Foreign Legion is a military service wing of the French Army established in 1831, unique because it was exclusively created for foreign nationals willing to serve in the French Armed Forces.
The original purpose of the Foreign Legion was to remove disruptive elements from society and put them to use fighting the enemies of France. Recruits included failed revolutionaries from the rest of Europe, soldiers from the disbanded Swiss and German mercenary regiments of the Bourbon monarchy, and troublemakers in general, both foreign and French.

My Rambling Thoughts
It's been a busy few days, but all is well. I flew to Denver, checked in to my motel, and got ready for Tahiti. Got to the airport 7a yesterday and met up with our group of about 20. Most I knew, so we started catching up. Then at 7:15 Ellie, our tour leader announced that Tahiti's government has stopped all cruise ships from entering their waters. After a couple more phone calls, we learned that the entire adventure had been canceled. Many offered to put up with me until I could get back to Flag. We visited a few more minutes...not nearly long enough, and I headed to SouthWest for a new ticket. The lady and her supervisor were very kind and understanding, the computer, not so much. The computer wanted $225 more for the last minute ticket. They worked on it a good 45 minutes, talking to several people who kept saying 'it is not Southwest's fault, so pay'. Finally the supervisor hung up, punched a whole bunch of keys and out popped at boarding pass and luggage tag. It was only one hour till the flight left, so I headed to the gate. Called the shuttle to change my reservation. They couldn't give me home delivery, because I hadn't asked 24 hours in advance. They didn't care about my story. I got to Phoenix. There was only one empty seat on the flight up to Denver, but this flight had 30 empty seats...unheard of before the virus. The guy with the window seat told me he was an environmental scientist and got a call that morning to return to his home and that all work and travel was canceled for the next six weeks. He has two kids in college, his wife is an exercise instructor at a local community center and all her classes were canceled on Monday with no start up day expected soon. The shuttle driver, whom I knew from previous trips, took me home...but got chewed out by his supervisor for doing it. I learned they are one of the only companies in the states that have rules that can NEVER be broken, or bent without consequences. I got home about 4p. I unpacked this morning. It was quite a day for sure, but all worked out just fine.

All of us are very disappointed, but all believe it is better to be safe than sorry. Can't imagine what it would be like to be stuck for 2 weeks in quarantine somewhere outside the US. Can't imagine what it would be like to finish our trip, only to learn we can't return to the US.

Every aspect of our economy is being tested with this virus. The travel industry has been hit very hard. Tumlare is busy getting us refunds, but it will take a few days. I feel for the many families that are suffering through this...especially those who need tourism, in and outside the US...think Indian Reservations. For our small group of travelers, there are canceled hotel reservations, canceled meals, canceled tour guides, canceled vehicles, and much more. These people need those tourist dollars to pay for housing, buy groceries, get fuel, and care for their families. In the tourist industry, our trip is multiplied many times over. A special thanks to all those are working tirelessly to make this virus cause the least amount of disruption to so many. Such awesome people.

On the home front, colleges are going on-line, but many students don't have internet access from their home. Restaurants are losing customers. With public gatherings being canceled, vendors, security, parking lots, hotels, and many others are also without revenue. There are many behind the scenes workers at schools, colleges, and other business who have no work it the venue is closed. And finally, for now, about 25% of public school kids depend on the free breakfast and lunch programs that are done at schools. What will they eat when the school closes due to this virus?

America is strong, and now is the time for everyone of us to do whatever we can to help.

Today’s Puzzle
Answer at the bottom of the page

A man is the owner of a winery who recently passed away. In his will, he left 21 barrels (seven of which are filled with wine, seven of which are half full, and seven of which are empty) to his three sons.
However, the wine and barrels must be split, so that each son has the same number of full barrels, the same number of half-full barrels, and the same number of empty barrels.
Note that there are no measuring devices handy.
How can the barrels and wine be evenly divided?

Puzzle Answer:

Two half-full barrels are dumped into one of the empty barrels. Two more half-full barrels are dumped into another one of the empty barrels. This results in nine full barrels, three half-full barrels, and nine empty barrels. Each son gets three full barrels, one half-full barrel, and three empty barrels.

My Rambling Thoughts

I head out early Wed. morning to get to Denver. Tomorrow is packing/washing day and a visit to the doctor, so this will be the last post until I return.

Got up this morning and realized I'll be on a ship in a few days. Headed to Walgreens for ginger. Stopped at the bank and picked up some cash for the trip. Had to get some small bills for tipping. Tomorrow I head to my Dr. for my 'medical certificate'. I am hoping for an 8x10, suitable for framing, certificate with my name embossed in Gold Leaf. I'll settle for anything with my name, his signature and degree, the date, and saying I'm fine for travel.

Last night was a fund raising for PBS...again. This time they had a great concert with Celtic Woman. Awesome show. Music was great, women playing instruments, one barefoot, others in heels, while dancing gracefully around the stage. I DVR's it and started watching the recording about an hour after it started, so I didn't have to listen to the fund raising part. I'm already a sustaining member. Too bad modern technology doesn't allow them to put the show on sustaining members TVs without all the long fund raising. Haha.

Puzzle Answer:

This is possible, and there are two ways to do it:
Solution 1: Fill the 3-cup bucket and pour it into the 5-cup bucket. Fill the 3-cup bucket again, and pour it into the 5-cup bucket until the 5-cup bucket is full. That will leave exactly 1 cup of sugar in the 3-cup bucket. Dump out the 5-cup bucket, and dump the 1 cup from the 3-cup bucket into the empty 5-cup bucket. This leaves 1 cup in the 5-cup bucket. Now fill the 3-cup bucket again and add it to the 5-cup bucket. Now you have exactly 4 cups of sugar in the 5-cup bucket!
Solution 2: Fill the 5-cup bucket. Pour it into the 3-cup bucket. This leaves 2 cups in the 5-cup bucket. Dump out the 3-cup bucket. Now pour the 2 cups from the 5 cup into the 3 cup. Refill the 5 cup. Now pour the 5 cup into the 3 cup until the 3 cup is full. That will leave exactly 4 cups in the 5-cup bucket!
