The top of the Washington Monument is capped with an 8.9-inch aluminum pyramid. The aluminum cap initially served as the apex of the monument's lightning rod. Around the United States, aluminum is recycled 50 percent of the time compared to glass and plastic, which are reprocessed less than 25 percent. In a mere 60 days, an aluminum can is recycled, turned into a new can, and back on a store shelf.

 

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

 

A nice fall day, leaves around my place are just now turning. Nice! Headed out for my Covid Booster. The hardest part was the 15-minute wait in the Dr. waiting room to be sure I didn’t have a reaction. Card filled out. Ready for whatever comes. Before yesterday, the only time I heard a tornado warning on the radio was when I was working in South Dakota. I was driving from Rapid City to Sturgis on a Saturday. The radio gave the warning, but I had no idea what county I was in. I turned around and went back to my hotel. When I pulled in, everyone was in the basement. We waited there about 30 minutes before leaving. No tornado hit. Yesterday, there was a warning for our county. It was mostly for the more rural areas on several forest roads around Flagstaff. No tornado this time either. I was listening to Andrew Yang last night. He is starting a new 3rd party called the Forward Party. Their primaries will be open to all eligible voters, the primaries will have ranked winners, and there will be an 18-year term limit for any candidate that wins the general for Congressional members. If it flies, it will certainly shake up the way we elect our leaders.

Aluminum is pretty amazing. Not only is it naturally non-toxic and durable, but of the most commonly recycled materials, aluminum is the only material that is infinitely recyclable. What this means is that once produced, it can be recycled over and over and over without any loss in quality. What are the other qualities and abilities of this miracle metal? Aluminum is the third most common element in the Earth's crust and the most abundantly available metal on Earth. Two-thirds of the aluminum ever produced is still in use today. Aluminum is very difficult to refine from its natural form. A method wasn't discovered until 1825, and for decades it was so expensive that aluminum was worth more than gold.

 

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

 

I was awakened about 2am to lots of lightning and thunder. Soon there was lots of rain. It has been raining on and off all day. This is making the forest very happy. It has been way too long since my last pedicure. The lady who has been doing my toes for years was upset and in her broken English said things at the salon were not good. When I went in this morning there was a totally new staff. A young lady did a nice job, and my feet are very happy. She said the new staff came in about 3 weeks ago. Hmmm. Tomorrow I get my booster. Things are going well. From the posts, the first Focus Travel Club adventure of 2021 was a big success. They went to New England to see the fall colors. Lots of beauty for sure. And a great start to the return of Focus post Covid.
