My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

A windy, chilly fall day. The HOA grounds team is busy cleaning up the pine needles on sidewalks and streets. Just not the gutter…darn.

The internet machine said that our local mall opened at 10am. I headed over there to get my glasses adjusted as they keep sliding down my nose. When I got there, they didn’t open until 11am. No big deal. I returned an hour later, and now my new glasses fit much better.

The Broncos lost to the Jets yesterday. The game was not on my TV.

Yesterday I got a notice on my phone that a tractor-trailer was on fire on I-40 a couple of miles from my place. It was not that unusual as it is usually a brake problem. This time it became more interesting because the cargo was several thousand pounds of charcoal briquettes. I took two fire trucks to put it out.

The UK has a new PM, Rishi Sunak was born in the UK, is of Punjabi descent, and is the 1st person of color to hold the position. He has a big mess to clean up.

Best Instrumentals NEW

"Rebel-Rouser" by Duane Eddy (1958)

Back in the day, Eddy was considered the "greatest instrumentalist of all time." While that might no longer be the case, he's still among the elite. To many rock guitar historians, this is the crowning jewel of his legacy. It's a folk tune with a dirty, gritty sound that was quite different for the time.

They live among us

The pedestrian light on the corner beeps when it's safe to cross the street.

I was crossing with an 'intellectually challenged' co-worker of mine.

She asked if I knew what the beeper was for.

I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red.

Appalled, she responded, 'what on earth are blind people doing driving?!'

She is a government employee.....

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Windy, cloudy, rainy with snow on the Peaks.

I was prepared to wake up to a slight covering of snow. Instead, it was raining and there were dead pine needles everywhere from the wind. Guess I’ll wait a little longer for snow.

Unsettling news story: The biological sisters of Sacheen Littlefeather, the lady who refused Marlon Brando’s Academy Award decades ago and to whom the Academy had apologized, are now saying that their sister lived in a fantasy world. Her father was Mexican, her mother was white. Her grandfather had abused her father in his youth. They showed biographical records to support their story. There are also no records showing that she is White Mountain Apache, as she claimed. If this account is true, it is discouraging that the media, Brando, or her family did not speak of this decades ago. If it is true, I get that the White Mountain Apache did not speak out as there are ‘wannabes’ [want to be Indians] all around.

Superstitions

The Ides of March

In early Roman calendars, Martius (March) was the first month of the year and dates were expressed by lunar phases as Kalends (Kal), Nones (Non), and Ides (Id). Ides of March referred to the first full moon of the year. Full moons have their own association with bad juju, but the real negative context of March 15 started with the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Centuries later, the day continued to be marred by everything from catastrophic weather events to the cancelation of the Ed Sullivan Show.

They live among us

I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked,

'Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?'

To which I replied, 'If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?'

He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's why we ask.'
